A GOD IN RUINS (Novel-Teddy Todd-England-20th Cent) - followup to “Life After Life” – Kate Atkinson
In Life After Life Ursula Todd lived through the turbulent events of the last century again and again. In A God in Ruins, Atkinson turns her focus on Ursula’s beloved younger brother Teddy – would-be poet, RAF bomber pilot, husband and father – as he navigates the perils and progress of the 20th century. For all Teddy endures in battle, his greatest challenge will be to face living in a future he never expected to have.

Chris – NR - Didn’t like it. It wasn’t a mystery and she didn’t like the characters. She also doesn’t care for war stories, but really didn’t like how mean the characters were to the kids. It just wasn’t her thing.

GROUP RATING AVERAGE: NR

THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD (Myst-Hercule Poirot-England-1920s) – 1st in series- Agatha Christie
Village rumor hints that Mrs. Ferrars poisoned her husband, but no one is sure. Then there's another victim in a chain of death. Unfortunately for the killer, master sleuth Hercule Poirot takes over the investigation.

Chris – Ex – Liked it a lot. The characters kept her interested and the story moved right along.
Erin – VG – She really loved Christie’s writing and the characters. She really enjoyed it.
LJ – Ex – The plot was wonderfully complex. You are given all the clues, but don’t see how it all goes together until it’s laid out at the end. It’s very easy to see why Christie is the best-selling novelist of all time.

Group Rating Average – VG+

THE RED THUMB MARK (Myst-Dr. Thorndyke-England-1907 – 1st in series – R. Austin Freeman
John Hornby is the proud owner of a dazzling diamond business and when his nephews go into business with him, they are determined to be given their full share of responsibility. A consignment of diamonds is entrusted to the nephews who place their precious hoard in a safe overnight. But come the morning, the diamonds are missing and incredibly, the safe has been left untouched, all except for two blood smeared thumb prints and the inevitable presence of the mysterious Mr. X.

Gabriel – Okay – He didn’t like the ending but admits he may have missed something. The forensic detail was interesting and Freeman did create a whole world. He also found the characters fairly interesting.
LJ – VG – I very much enjoyed reading an author of whom I’d not known. You can see the influence of Sherlock Holmes, but I liked the relationship between the two men better here. The various scientific experiments were fascinating and the courtroom scene was well done. I’d certainly read ore by Freeman.

Group Rating Average – G+
