I thought it would be nice to have a place to comment on various book-to-movie (or sometimes miniseries) adaptations. With all the TIFF buzz, and new adaptations continually being announced, it's always a topic that interests me.

Exciting new for fans of the Cormoran Strike books (The Cuckoo's Calling, The Silkworm, Career of Evil):Confirmed: Tom Burke to play Cormoran Strike in BBC's JK Rowling dramas
And some Canadiana of course:Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace coming to CBC and Netflix as a miniseries
BBC adapting Eleanor Catton's The Luminaries for television
New Anne of Green Gables series to stream on Netflix

This week I also watched two book-to movie adaptations that are worth mentioning. On Netflix, I watched Still Alice, which I thought was great. Julianne Moore gave a heartbreaking performance that did service to the book. Last night we did a book club movie night and caught The Light Between Oceans. Wow. What a tearjerker. Even more so than the book I think. And yes, I just copy and pasted this from the Spine Crackers discussion!I also saw the trailer for The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl's Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster, which looks like an inspiring movie.

I am so excited about all of these!! Mostly Alias Grace, and I'm very curious about the new Anne of Green Gables.
BBC productions are awesome! I read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke a few years ago and the 3 part miniseries BBC made of it was great! On the other hand, I wasn't as keen on the series made from The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber because I thought it lost a lot of the detail that ended up making the tv series flatter, not as layered as the book.
I pretty much love every single BBC production. Thank goodness for PBS and Netflix carrying most of them!
Anybody read A Man Called Ove? Here is the trailer for the movie which is pending: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTvdJ...
We saw the movie based on Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children yesterday. Tim Burton made it and it's got his hand stamped all over it. They did end up changing the last third and ending but I think that's because they aren't making a trilogy to match the three books. The seemed to have clearly ended the story in the one movie so they rewrote how it came together to end. I did like how they did it a lot, it suited the rest of the story and how the books probably would have handled it if there had only been one. The CGI was actually quite good and I'm not always a big fan of it. You couldn't make this film without it though, and some of it was very clever. I loved the books and had high hopes for the movie. Wasn't disappointed at all.

I saw movie adaptation of The Girl on the Train last night. I know some people aren't fond of this book, but I thought they did a great job with the movie. It stayed pretty true to the book as well.

I have read the book but not seen the movie - sometimes our book club does a movie night for a book we have read and it might be time soon!
I saw the film "Moonlight" this past weekend, which is based off of the play "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue" by Tarell Alvin McCraney. I don't know if the play is available to read recreationally or even in print, but I want to find it because of how remarkable the film is. Heartbreaking, breathtaking, and beautiful. I desperately want to get my hands on a copy of the play! High recommend.
My choice for this might be The Rehearsal by Eleanor Catton which was turned into a movie and presented at TIFF this year, I believe. The BBC really does do great things and one we saw earlier this year, based on the book, was Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
I've heard a few of you singing the praises of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. Looks like a movie is in the works. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news...
I will be looking forward to this book to movie adaptation of Our Souls at Night with Robert Reford and Jane Fonda! http://movieweb.com/our-souls-at-nigh...
I might just have to reread The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks before the movie comes out. here are some pictures of Oprah in the movies:

@Susan, I just got this book as a gift for Christmas! Can't wait to read it, had no idea it was being made into a movie!
It is an amazing story and so hard to believe the things that happened to both HL and her family. As a health professional, it sure makes me appreciate the importance of consent!
It's probably the best book I read in 2016! I recommend it to everyone! I had no idea that there would be a movie -- awesome!!
Here is another list of adaptations from the Guardian - nice to see a Canadian (Atwood) on this list twice, once for the The Handmaid's Tale and again for Alias Grace:

I'm excited about The Handmaid's Tale. I've never read Alias Grace. Guess I should get to it!
These are both on my TBR list - Handmaid's Tale for a reread (I think I was in highschool the first time I read it) and Alias Grace is waiting for me to pick up. My book club talked about The Heart Goes Last last night and we had a fun discussion about this very creative book.
༺ Allison ༻ wrote: "The first official trailer for The Handmaid's Tale."Can't wait! This is going to be a reread for me after 20-ish years this year for BINGO.
Diane wrote: "I'm planning to reread it as well though probably as a "classic Canadian" book"I'm going to use it for the Banned Book square, @Diane.
We've had lots of discussion about The Handmaid's Tale and Anne of Green Gables. Here's a nice list from Buzzfeed of TV shows based on books premiering In 2017. https://www.buzzfeed.com/farrahpenn/h...
There's a BBC adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials due 'late 2017', rumoured to be possibly running over 40 episodes and five series. I, for one, am not a fan of the series. I read the first, but was not enticed to continue reading. http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/cult/fea...
They actually have made a Hollywood movie of the first book, The Golden Compass (as it was titled in the US) about 10 years ago with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. I don't think it went over well because they never continued with the other two books. I have read them and liked them. They are different and also, apparently, an allegory which went right over my head. The BBC usually does well with things, though, so the series might be good.
They have just announced that Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman is going to be an Amazon limited series http://tvline.com/2017/01/19/good-ome...
I read the book recently. I thought it was only okay, not sure if I'll watch.
I loved Good Omens! Actually, BBC radio did a radio play of it last year in three parts. It was quite good. It'll be interesting to see what they do with the series.
The Dinner is being made into a movie! I loved that book (even though I know lots of people didn't) and think it would translate very well to the screen!I have Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race on deck for February's challenge.
I have to admit that the Dinner was not my favourite but I also want to read Hidden Fingers. I know that the newest Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Long Haul will be popular with my youngest! I finished Wonder and he is reading it so we can also go and see Wonder together.
The Dinner!!!!! Sweet God that's one movie I am NOT going to see. :)(no disrespect to those fans..... just trying to be funny.....I really hated that one) :)
I was just sending this to my in person book club @May - it is great when we can talk about the book and then go see the movie!
@Susan, I had this book on my shelf for years! I have to read it!I also just pushed Wonder up my TBR, as the movie is coming out soon :)
