"Dragonet" by Sara Reine

From the scifi anthology Dark Beyond the Stars, part of our discussion of Dark Beyond the Stars anthology.

Military sci-fi. The alien enemy apparently looks like dragons. In an engagement where humans are attempting to retake one of their former colony planets, a pair of humans lose a dogfight and crash land on the planet, where they find a alien egg hatchery. The heroine comes up with the idea of making head of one of the only baby aliens left alive, apparently with the idea of making it the diplomatic bridge. huh. In some ways it's embracing Longyear's Enemy Mine.

This is another story where the male character is a bloodthirsty idiot.
