Thanks, Cora, for the pick of Detective for October!

I grew up loving mysteries and practically read only mysteries for quite a few years in my childhood. I don't think I'd have much a problem picking books... actually, I probably WILL have a problem as there are too many to choose from! What's on your tbr or do you have to look outside of your tbr?

Christina (cmb1987) | 161 comments Mystery novels are something that I'm just recently getting into but I am greatly enjoying them. For this month I'm going to read The Bone Collector.

This is one of my favorite genres!

On my list:
Farewell, My Lovely
Whose Body?
The Monkey's Raincoat
The Closers

Liisa Ady (liisaady) Can anyone suggest a mystery book that does NOT include anything creepy, murders, etc? :D Something light, no spooky cases, maybe some kind of theft but that is all. I haven't read many mystery books because I hate the kind of things mentioned above. the only one which I thought was good was the The Invisible Library, but it is more of a fantasy book.

Same here! As a teen I read most of Agatha Christie's production, along other mysteries by authors such as Edgar Wallace, Anne Perry, etc. Then I had a period when I wouldn't want to read a mystery in a million years, but in the last few years I've been reading them again, and enjoying the genre immensely.

I will have problems picking a book for this month's shelf, as I've already read most of them :-D However, I'll probably choose either The Woman in White or Jar City, as I already own them.

This should be easy for me, lol. Mysteries are my second favorite genre and my second most read. Like most of you, my love of mysteries began in high school with Agatha Christie and, believe it or not, Mary Higgins Clark. I have loved mysteries ever since, especially ones that throw an ending that surprises me. My favorite recent mysteries have been the Tracy Crosswhite series by Robert Dugoni, Gone Girl, the Promise Falls books by Linwood Barclay, and anything by Harlan Coben. I am also re-reading all of the Agatha Christies, this year focusing on reading the Miss Marple books in order. For next month, I already have slated:

A Pocket Full of Rye by Agatha Christie
Whispers in the Mist by Lisa Alber
Missing, Presumed by Susie Steiner
The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe

Do you like cozy mysteries? Or how about Agatha Christie? Her books have murders in them, but they are not focused on and definitely not covered in a grisly way.

I love the Elvis Cole books. He is a very sarcastic character, and I love the voice that these books have. They sort of remind me of Dahsell Hammet books.

Thanks for suggestions. Just the concept makes me avoid these books, Agatha Christie and stuff like this (and common mystery series too like Hercule Poirot or something like this) . I think I will skip this month. :/

I will keep looking to see if I can find some detective stories that do not have any killing in them. There has to be some out there somewhere. If I run across one I will let you know. Otherwise, skipping this month might be the thing to do.

Marina (sonnenbarke) | 1513 comments Kirss, I would suggest A Scone To Die For, which I read earlier this year and found absolutely delicious. It's a cozy mystery so it's very relaxed and free of violence or creepy things. However, it does have a murder in it. You might want to try and read the excerpt on Amazon and see if it can be your thing.

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments Kirss - maybe The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency - no murder that i can remember

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie - has a teen protagonist

The Beekeeper's Apprentice - missing person (I think)

The Eyre Affair

These are good suggestions, Dee. I had forgotten about the Jasper Fforde books.

I found this blog on the internet that deals with the very subject that you are talking about. Here is a link to the blog which talks about mysteries without murder. http://www.cozy-mystery.com/blog/cozy....

I also found a Goodreads discussion in the Cozy Mysteries group which deals with mysteries with no violence: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Hope one of these will help.

I hope one of them works for you - I had to think about if they featured anything grisly since it's been a few years since I'vectead several of them

Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie has a murder, but not the other one. I have read all the books out so far of each of these series. If you like audiobooks, I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook for Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie.

HOWEVER, I think you'll far prefer The First Ladies' series as Flavia is a bit macabre for a precocious 11 year old in that she likes to study chemistry, and poisons in particular.
