Jenni | 7 comments I just read The Miniature World of Marvin and James and it was very sweet. Kelly Murphy is doing the illustrations again, and they are a nice complement to the simple story.

Jen Ferry (librarygarden) | 17 comments I just picked up Cat Napped by Leeza Hernandez at the library and while it is for a young reader, unfortunately the illustrations don't really function as keys or clues to the text. It is though a book that kiddos who like to read about cats will enjoy. Good book for word choice.

Helen I wish Dory Fantasmagory was eligible, but I think the limit is 96 pages! Has anyone read anything recently that might be a contender?

message 4: by Jen (new)

Jen Ferry (librarygarden) | 17 comments True about the page limit. I don't feel that I've read much, or seen very many beginning books this year, but I'm sure they're out there. I did just catalog My New Friend Is So Fun by Willems, June 2014. I love EP, but there has got to be more out there!

Jenni | 7 comments It's funny, I started this group in hopes of finding great recommendations, but let it flounder after a few months because there wasn't much new stuff out there!
Our Title 1 Team just recently analyzed the Easy Reader section at our public library and created a list organized by reading level using the DRA system. We were surprised to see how few titles were available for the emerging reader. On top of that, how few are truly good and entertaining. Elephant and Piggie are a huge hit with our kindergarteners and first graders, but they really stand alone.

Jen Ferry (librarygarden) | 17 comments Jenni,

Do you have a link to the list your public library put together? If so, please share!

message 7: by Jenni (new)

Jenni | 7 comments This is a link to our Resources page. It has our local library list, as well as, lists compiled by other reading programs around the country.

Thanks Jenni! I'm just across the water from you in WS. Small world!

Jenni | 7 comments No way! Are you at a school or a public library?

Elementary school in Highline.

Jen Ferry (librarygarden) | 17 comments I just read Three Little Peas by Rivoal. Although it's not eligible for the Geisel it's an excellent beginning reader title. Check it out!

Helen I didn't mind The Princess in Black (& it's seemingly eligible for the prize!). Our little guy doesn't identify themes as being particularly gender-specific as yet & will just as happily read about princesses as he will about monster trucks, though he wasn't really taken with this. Back to Mo Willems we go!

Has anyone else looked at this one?

I have it on hold at the library right now. The reviews all seem pretty positive, too.

Jen Ferry (librarygarden) | 17 comments The Princess in Black is a humorous, action filled story and it will be a welcome addition to my beginning chapter book section. I look forward to more books in this series. Of course I'm always looking for more boy lead character books!

Helen Found a good one. Anyone else read What This Story Needs Is a Pig in a Wig?

message 16: by Laura (new)

Laura Harrison Helen wrote: "Found a good one. Anyone else read What This Story Needs Is a Pig in a Wig?"

This title is a definite contender.

message 17: by Laura (new)

Laura Harrison I would love it if Bob Shea's Ballet Cat: The Totally Secret Secret won. Mo Willems has more titles coming out in his piggie and elephant series. He will probably win one again.

Kristen Jorgensen (sunnie) | 2 comments I loved Ballet Cat: The Totally Secret Secret. I see this as a Geisel contender.

Helen Right - off to order Ballet Cat straight away! Thanks guys!
