Janice (jamasc) | 60348 comments Stop! Have you done the Homework? If not go do the homework before reading any further.

Once you have reached this part, you may not change your answers.

This year's challenge is all about you. Because it is all about you, I will not be making any rulings about the books you chose. You interpret them your own way.

The challenge is to read 12 books throughout the year based on the answers you made to the survey. You will receive a badge for completion of the challenge.

Additional badges will be awarded when you read an additional 12 books, and when you read all 50 books.

A possible 3 badges can be achieved in the challenge.

------------------------------------------------------------

When you complete a book for the challenge, you need to leave a new message in your personal thread explaining the following:

- a countdown of the books you read - Part 1: 1/12, 2/12, 3/12, etc. If you are working on subsequent badges, you will need to preface with Part 2 or Part 3.

- the book you read, link to it and the cover

- the question it relates to

- an explanation as to how the book you chose relates to your answer to the question

------------------------------------------------------------

General Rules:

1. You must read 12 different books. You may not count one book for two questions. You may not repeat a question. For example, you can't read two books for question 1 and leave out question 2.

2. You may not combine books with the Monthly Challenge.

3. The challenge is from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017. You must start and complete your books within the year AND within the time that you start the challenge. If you are late to start the challenge, you may not count books prior to when you start even if they were started/read after January 1.

4. Books must be at least 175 pages long. They may be any genre (unless specified in a task) and in any format (audiobook, ebook, hardcover/paperback). In the case where the edition you read does not specify page numbers, we will go with the edition from the Goodread’s search function.

5. If a task refers to the title, the subtitle doesn’t count.

6. If a task refers to the cover, it will be based on the cover of the issue you decide to read.

7. You will need to start your own reporting thread in this folder to track your progress. There will be a thread set up to report your success in completing the challenge and requesting your badge.

Have fun!

Janice (jamasc) | 60348 comments The Survey dictates that you find a book for each book as per the following criteria:

1. What is your name? (First, Last, Middle, Nickname) – Read a book that contains one of your names in some way – author, title, character.

2. What is your favourite sport? – Read a book that is either about your favourite sport or one of the characters plays that sport. You could also chose a book where the cover shows that sport.

3. What colour are your eyes? – Read a book where the colour of your eyes is the main colour of the cover, or the word is in the title.

4. Have you ever had a broken bone? – If yes, read a book with the word “Bone” in the title. If no, read a book about archeology (the character may be an archeologist, the book may be set in a museum, etc)

5. What is your favourite movie? – If the movie is an adaptation, read the book that inspired the movie. Or, read a book that is written by the same author. Or, read a book that has the same title. If the movie is not an adaptation, read a book with a similar theme or has the same title.

6. What is your favourite book? – Read it again. Or, read a book that has the same title. Or read a book by the same author. If you can’t find the same title, or the author only has the one book, go to the book page and click on “Readers Also Enjoyed”. Select a book from the list.

7. Pick a number between 1 and 10. – Select a series and read the book that corresponds to that number. Or, read a book with the number in the title.

8. What is your favourite holiday? – Read a book that is about that holiday, set during that holiday, or has the name in the title.

9. What is your relationship status? – Read a book with that word in the title, or where the main character or author shares that status. Or…. Get creative. What kind of book will be representative?

10. Are you right or left handed? – Read a book with that word in the title.

11. What is your birthday month? – Read a book with the selected month in the title, or set during that month.

12. Do you have a pet? What is it? Don’t have a pet? Adopt a pet that someone in your immediate circle has (mother, brother, sister, friend, etc.) – Read a book featuring that type of pet. Or, read a book with that pet in the title.

13. What is your favourite type of food? (Chinese, Italian, Mexican, etc) – Read a book set in the country or region of choice. (Chinese – set in China, Italian – set in Italy, etc.) If you chose a type of food that is not specific to a country, what region would you find it prevalent? Read a book set in that region. For example – Seafood would be prevalent in the coastal areas of Canada, United States, among others.

14. What is something you use daily? (brush, computer, car, get creative) - Read a book with that word in the title. Or, is on the cover. Or…. Get creative. What kind of book will represent that item?

15. What is your shoe size? (No halves; roll up to next number) – Select that number of books on your TBR, put them into the Fruit Machine (or another randomizer), and read the one that is selected. If you used European sizes, convert to US using this site: https://www.softmoc.com/ca/shoesize.asp That will reduce the number of books you need to plug into the Fruit Machine.

16. What is your favourite Ice cream flavour? – Read a book that either represents that flavour by the colour of the cover, or in the title. You may also chose a book that represents that flavour in some way.

17. What is your country of birth? – Read a book set in that country, or written by an author that was also born in that country.

18. What is your favourite season? – Read a book with either the season in the title, or set in that season.

19. What is your current desk top picture? – Interpret that desk top picture any way you like. Read a book that represents that interpretation. For example, mine is a magnified picture of a frozen soap bubble. I could interpret it as ice, or alien landscape, or bubble. I could read a book with “Ice” in the title, a book set on an alien planet, or has bubbles on the cover. The gophering could be endless on this one.

27. Do you have a tattoo? – Read a book that represents your tattoo in some way. For example, if you have a tattoo of a rose, your book choice could have a rose on the cover, in the title, or a proper name of the author or character. If you don’t have a tattoo, read a book with a tattoo on the cover, or represents a tattoo that you would want if you were to get one.

28. Do you prefer Classic or Contemporary? – If Classic, read a book published in 1800 – 1899. If Contemporary, read a book published in 2000 – 2017.

29. What is your favourite flower? – Read a book with that selection on the cover or in the title. Or, read a book that you feel represents that flower in some way.

45. Do you prefer green or black olives? Neither? Read a book with either a predominantly green or black cover depending on your answer. If you said “neither”, read a book with a predominantly white cover. Aim for at least 75% of the cover so that when you look at the cover, it screams green, black or white depending on your choice.

46. What is your Zodiac sign? – This one is wide open. Read a book that represents your zodiac sign in some way. Mine is Sagittarius (the archer). 47. What is your height in inches? – Go to your TBR shelf and sort by number. Read the book that matches your answer. If you don’t have that many books on your TBR, select a listopia on a topic you are interested and read the book with the corresponding number to your height.

It's up to you. This is going to be my stock answer.

Janice (jamasc) | 60348 comments There is an Elsbeth Witt who is a Goodreads author. Actually, there are a few authors with the name Elsbeth.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Great challenge! So versatile! Thank you, Janice!

I have one question (I hate it, sorry), the personal thread for reporting it is a new thread or the "homework" thread works?

message 9: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments This is great! I just turned off the computer but I'll turn it back on to start gophering. Putting down the first things that came to my mind while reading the criteria.

I'll aim for 24, not sure if I can manage. 12 should be no problem.

Thanks for another great one Janice :)

Use the one you set up for doing the homework.

I think it's actually max 50 books.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Yes, there are badges for sets of 12 and for completing the 50. That's not too much for you anyways, Deborah. :)

Joan Great challenge! You mods amaze me with your creativity.

message 16: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1150 comments This is so great! I have a book by my favorite author waiting to be read and 2 by the author of my favorite book!

Only finding a non-children's book about Sinterklaas is a bit more difficult. As is finding a book that takes place in Liechtenstein! :)

message 17: by Peggy (last edited Nov 27, 2016 10:43AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments I assumed that you can only read one book for each question (so for the 12-questions badge, you have to pick 12 of the question and read one book for each question) but I actually don't see that in the rules (it is implied I think, but I'm not sure).

I'm going for unique question no matter what the rule is, but just in case :)

Agreed!! :) :) :)

Knowing my mood reading inclinations, initially I am going for 12 so I don't feel overwhelmed by reading tasks next year. That is great additional badges will be available for reading 24 or all 50 books though!! It will be fun to read everyone's gophering plans.

I plan on gophering for all of the questions and then the first 12 I read will count towards my first badge. Anything after that is gravy for me.

message 24: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 27, 2016 11:58AM) (new)

Good idea, Janice. In all likelihood I will gopher for most of them and then decide what to read. I may end up reading more as the year progresses. :-)

Also, I am trying to gopher from books I own first before considering other options. Great way to clear more books off my bookshelf.

message 25: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60348 comments I will also aim for books I own first, but some may require new acquisitions.

message 26: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments Me too. I'm trying to get as many as possible in from the ones on my priority-list, and then other books I own, but I'll probably buy a few as well. I'm sure I'll find books during gophering that I've been wanting to read for ages and then I can use this challenge as an excuse to buy them ;-)

Trudy (trudyan) | 1779 comments Great challenge, Janice! Some will be easy, some not as easy as they first appear. Of course, I am currently reading a book that fits one of the tougher questions. I should have waited until January to read it! Oh well, it will be fun to find another. I plan to read books that I already own or that are available from the regional library. I'll see how long that lasts! :-) 24 books seems doable, don't you think?

message 30: by Almeta (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11501 comments Janice, I think for #38 you may have meant "Brazil for COFFEE". not "tea"?

Love the challenge. Difficult gophering is some cases!

message 31: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19467 comments I plan to gopher for all 50, but set my initial goal for 12. If I meet that goal early enough in the year, I'll make a new goal of 24, then again to 50, though it's unlikely I'll get to all 50. It will be fun trying. :)

I'm going to start with books that I own or books that I already have on my TBR and can pick up from the library. I'm sure I'll end up picking up a few more, but I want to start knocking some books off my TBR with this challenge.

I'm sure some of my gophered books will change through the year too.

It's a good thing others can figure out what's going on in my mind. Yes, Brazil is known more for it's coffee than it's tea.

Thanks, Janice, I got it to work. The problem was I didn't have the # in the heading and didn't have that shelf set as sortable. Anyway, I got it now.

However, I do have another question. My famous person for question #31, Matt Lauer, I can't find any books on him that fit the rules, there were 2 that are not long enough. Is this one where I can be creative on making a connection to a book, because the criteria didn't sound like it would be?
Thanks again for your help!

When a word is specified like "accident" your choice should reflect that word. There are lots of books available with "accident" in the title, and there are lots of books set in a hospital.

Yes, I will set up a thread right away.

Thanks, Janice. I can make it work. I just had one in mind that I already own, so I figured I'd ask. I'm sure I can find something else easily enough.

Thanks for the thread too.

Stephanie Quick question from me in regards to #31. I may not choose this one to read a book for but just in case I make it through all 50, I thought I would ask. What do we do if there isn't a biography, autobiography etc written about the person we would like to meet? For example, my person is TJ Oshie. He is my favorite player on the Washington Capitals hockey team. There are a lot of news articles on him but zero books. Should I pick a different person if I decide to read a book for this one? Thanks Janice. Sorry if my question makes zero sense lol! It has been a long day ;)

Ariane | 949 comments Great challenge, Janice, thank you! Off gophering...

message 48: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11265 comments Stephanie, for #31 I chose Pope Francis, and although there are biographies about him, I'd rather read the last book he wrote. I know the task says biography/autobiography/memories, but it is my understanding that Janice is leaving the tasks pretty open, since it is an "all about you" challenge, so I want to know more about Pope Francis from his own words, and this will be my explanation of why I chose that book in my report post. I hope it helps.

message 49: by Peggy (last edited Nov 28, 2016 05:32AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15795 comments I don't think you're allowed to change anything Stephanie.

I also might interpret question 31 a bit more broadly. I named two people (Rory Gallagher and Dave Grohl), and apparently they both have a biography written about them (I had no idea!), but given the number of GR ratings they seem pretty obscure. If I'm not able to get a copy, I might read a biography of Nirvana, which should have Dave Grohl covered as well ;-)

So perhaps you could read a book about the team TJ Oshie plays in, or of a hockey player who was a big example to him?

message 50: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2107 comments I have the same problem with Matt Lauer. There's 2 books but neither one have 175 pages. Janice said I just need to find a book that I can make a connection.
