Book Geeks and Bookniks discussion

Hi there. I was recently invited to join the revamped Book of the Month subscription service. On the surface, it all seems fine and good: you get to purchase a book a month based on a few options, and you pay a lower price for the selection. What I'm wondering is: who is getting screwed by me purchasing these editions? I know they print their own versions, and the quality isn't as high, but are authors still getting paid based on the sales? I may be wrong, but I seem to remember those CD Membership clubs from the 90s were notoriously shady for the artists, and I worry this could be the same deal. If anyone has any information on this they could share I'd really appreciate it.
