Welcome to Worth the Read. My name is Ashley Gordon and I am publisher and editor of inRegister Magazine, a lifestyle publication in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I'm also a complete book nerd. I love to read, and I love to know what others are reading. I truly believe that books open us up to the lives of others and help us become more compassionate, understanding people. I also believe that we should not limit our reading choices to things that we think are true or right. Books expand our thoughts and challenge our assumptions.

Join me as we read books each month, selected by an advisory committee and from other members like you. Make a suggestion! I assure you that these books will be worth the read. Enjoy the club.

Thanks Milette -- what genres and/or authors do you usually read?

Judy Kaufman | 4 comments My name is Judy. I'm a retired teacher (Third grade ST.J - I know that's why Ashley is such a good writer - Ha:-)
This is a great idea! Though I'm in other book clubs, this really seems like fun!
I'd like to suggest "Into the Free" and the sequel, "When Mountains Move" by a young woman, Julie Cantrell, who grew up in Walker and now lives in Oxford, MS. She has won a number of awards and her books have been well received. She is currently working on her new book that is set in WALKER. Should be fun to read and I love to help promote local talent. Thanks, Ashley!

Elizabeth | 2 comments My name is Liz and I also love to read when time permits. Being a teacher, the summer is the opportune time for me to read. I will read whatever is in front of me. I just finished Another Peice of My Heart by Jane Green. It was an entertaining book and a fast read for me. I am looking forward to reading this month's book. Thanks Ashley!!!

Karen Richard | 4 comments Just checked out the library online, and this book is not there. I'm assuming the books we will be reading will be brand new books just out? I'm an old school book reader who likes to turn real pages - that tactile experience!

Ashley | 19 comments Mod
Karen, this book was published in 2012 I think. Maybe it's all checked out? I like real pages too! I returned my copy to the library today. Some of our choices will be new, but we will choose a few older ones as well as classics. Hope you get your hands on one.

Karen Richard | 4 comments I must have misspelled something previously. Just found it at the library online and put it on hold. Can't wait to get started reading - sounds really good after reading the synopsis.

Ashley | 2 comments Hi, my name is Ashley, and, like you all here, I love to read. I'm a stay at home mom who often ignores my "to do" list in order to read. I find I am never without a book, and I enjoy all sorts of literature. So...I'm delighted to be a part of this group! Thank you, Ashley, for starting "Worth the Read!" I look forward to enjoying some new selections.

Shala -- I am thrilled that you joined! I respect your opinion so much. I really think you might enjoy this first book because it is all about storytelling and how the stories we are told stay with us, even in tragic times. (I know that this is different from your vocation, but your job title triggered this memory of the book.) Thanks for joining and contributing! Please let me know if you have any suggestions. ASG

message 22: by Liz (new)

Liz Harris | 1 comments What an awesome idea! So glad to join in and read along. I especially enjoy reading when it's a shared experience! Yay Ashley!

message 23: by Phyllis (new)

Phyllis | 3 comments Hello, my name is Phyllis and my lament is that there are so many books and so little time. Working full time seems to take a big bite out do my reading time, but I usually have three books going at a time: an ebook in my iPad, a "real" book for technology free reading and an audiobook I listen to in the car. I have longed for a book group for several years, so I am thrilled with the opportunity to join you. I will try any book as long as a reading friend recommends it. I am glad to pushed out of my comfort zone, especially if it proves to be a satisfying read. The book I'm reading now, The Art of Hearing Heartbeats, is on do may not have picked up on my own, but I am captivated! Looking forward to this book, one I've been circling for a while, but reluctant to take the plunge. Thanks for the push!

Wile I love printed books, I still have my hard cover of Dante's Inferno from college, I am learning to love to e-read too. Can't wait to see what new stories we'll discover and learn to love in this group!

message 37: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Alexander | 3 comments Welcome Darla! This group has introduced me to some wonderful "lose yourself" reading - hoping it does the same for you! This is definitely a good time of year to curl up with a good book. Happy Thanksgiving!
