Thought I'd add a topic about news about or related to Mike.

First, a link to an interesting article by Mike, about Arthur C. Clarke, Stanley Kubrick and '2001: A Space Odyssey,' from the 'New Statesman' site.

"Close to tears, he left at the intermission": how Stanley Kubrick upset Arthur C Clarke

Well worth a read. ;->)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Secondly, a link to a review of a new young adult fiction novel, 'Agent of Chaos,' about the 'X Files' character Fox Mulder, as a teenager.

Teen Mulder & Scully Investigate in Two New X-Files YA Novels

In 'Agent of Chaos,' Mike's Elric novel, 'Stormbringer,' has become a plot element.

And, a link to an interview with the author of, 'Agent of Chaos,' in which she expands on the background to the Stormbringer connection.

The X-Files Origins: Agent of Chaos, A Chat with Author Kami Garcia

Might just be worth checking out this YA novel.

TTFN :->)

Daniel (zlogdan) WOW thanks PM! I was reading a Warren Ellis comic some years ago where he mentions he got Clarke's email from an email Mike sent to all his friends but forgot to BCC them.

Truth to be told, the very first science fiction book I read was "Childhoods End" when I was 13 ( I consciously had decided I could read more mature stuff at that age ;-) ) and I read many Clarke's books over the years and still like them except "Childhoods End".

Sad news from the New York Times, of the passing away of, Emma Tennant, one of Mike's old editors.

Emma Tennant, Who Wrote Beyond the Fringe of Realism, Dies at 79

Quote:

In 1975 she founded the influential literary journal Bananas, which published new work by Mr. Ballard, Beryl Bainbridge, Angela Carter and the science-fiction writer Michael Moorcock. She served as editor for three years.

Definitely a writer whose works I'll be looking out for, in the future.

A double review from Mike, in the New Statesman:

What is the "New Weird" – and what makes weird fiction so relevant to our times?

' The surrealist fancies of the “New Weird,” find elegant expression in The Erstwhile by Brian Catling and The Last Days of New Paris by China Miéville.'

As usual, very much worth a read. ;>)

message 8: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (zlogdan) I really want to read The Last Days of New Paris but the prices for the digital ebooks is still high.

Not sure about that, but I did, rather belatedly, come across an announcement about Mike giving a talk and doing a book signing in San Francisco, on the 9th of this month (April), at the Bookbinder's Museum. There may be a podcast of the event at some point. If it happens, I'll let you know.

Right, as promised. A couple of links concerning Mike's interview in SF, back in April.

Firstly, a link to a piece on the Locus mag website:

SF in SF with Michael Moorcock
(This and more like it in the May 2018 issue of Locus.)

There's also a nice pic of Mike, standing with, Jacob & Rina Weisman and Terry Bisson.

And, secondly, the link to the actual, Soma FM podcast, itself:

April 2018: A Conversation with Michael Moorcock
(Michael Moorcock in conversation with Terry Bisson, along with questions from the audience.)

Haven't listened to all of it myself, yet. A good sized, almost an hour and a half running time, but what I've heard so far sounds jolly good.

Went up stairs to have a smoke, total a whack o'wine, watch the end of, Maigret, The riddle of the Halted Train and headed, inevitably, for the podcast.

A blast! A question and answer master class in Mike, his writings and writing in general. Interesting auto-bibliography.

In which we discover that Elric is very much Mike's Holmes.

There's also a laugh out loud moment with a 'fan''s appreciation of Elric versus the Black Orchid (was it?), or whichever flower oriented plant protagonist that it actually was, which is a spoof to the max of sexual imagery.

Well worth a listen!

[And after you've listened. A rider.]
No. I'm a not a shill for Mike, Good Reads, Locus, Nor anybody. I'm a good boy I am. And very much a long time fan.

Hello, My Friends!

I missed this somehow. I don't know if it was discussed here, but I am very pleased to see something new in print! -

"Pegging the President", a novella by Michael Moorcock.

(A book in the Jerry Cornelius series)

In Stock:

https://www.fantasticfiction.com/m/mi...

'SYNOPSIS In the 1960s Jerry Cornelius was the coolest assassin on the Ladbroke Grove block.

By the 1970s The Condition of Muzak had won the Guardian Fiction Prize and The Final Programme was a feature film starring Jon Finch, Jenny Runacre, Hugh Griffith and Sterling Hayden.

In the 1980s the world s first cyberpunk continued to inspire a generation of writers including William Gibson, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and bands like the Human League.

By the 1990s he was up and running towards the guns again in stories like The Spencer Inheritance , The Camus Referendum and Cheering for the Rockets , which dealt with the icons and key events of the day.

At turn of the millennium, in Firing the Cathedral, he responded to the attacks on America of September 2001 and their consequences, to the realities of global warming and global terrorism.

Now, in Pegging the President, Jerry Cornelius is back; the ambiguous, amoral, androgynous English Assassin, cooler, sharper, his fingers still firmly on the pulse of the twenty-first century, counting names and taking heads, showing once again that colonialism and despotism the roots of empire gone sour do not change. The apocalypse has never seemed more terrifying, never been more fun, and modern life will never feel the same to you again.'

Who's ready to swear by The Runestaff? :)

'The BBC has announced that it has snapped up the rights to Michael Moorcock’s Runestaff fantasy book series and has set screenwriter Steve Thompson (Sherlock, Doctor Who), producer John Yorke (Life on Mars) and executive producer Richard Stokes (Broadchurch, Torchwood) to develop a TV adaptation.

“I am delighted that BBC Studios is developing the Runestaff series for TV,” said Moorcock. “I believe the team will do an outstanding job and I’m looking forward to seeing Hawkmoon, Count Brass and Yisselda brought to the screen. This is a perfect time for the series, which seems more relevant today than it did when I originally wrote it. I will be working closely with the writers to develop the stories. I feel like a schoolboy, breathlessly waiting for the first episode to be aired.”

“The Runestaff novels were the first books that captured my imagination,” added Thompson. “It’s a privilege and a great adventure to be working with Michael Moorcock. I feel like I’ve just been handed the keys to the crown jewels of fantasy fiction.”

Runestaff spans four novels – The Jewel in the Skull, The Mad God’s Amulet, Sword of the Dawn and The Runestaff – and tells the story of a resistance against a tyrannical rule, with the protagonist Hawkmoon setting out on a journey which “takes him from ghost-cities in the Syrian desert to pirate colonies in the American bayou; from caravans of mutant creatures in Carpathian mountains to the heart of the Dark Empire itself – the glittering city of Londra where the river runs blood red.” '

I think this will be awesome! Hawkmoon!

Brant | 7 comments Very excited about this! However, I have some reasonable fear that it will be an interpretation that will appear much more modern than medieval. I'm hoping for a medieval steam punk style to the aesthetics, but after seeing how Shannara was massacred... I just hope they don't make it overly contemporary with people wearing Champion-brand sweats under their armor (like they did in MTV's wretched excuse for Shannara) ya know?

With that said, if they can really focus on characters and bringing out the hooks of the storyline, it would be awesome to introduce younger generations to the allure of Moorcock's cerebral fantasy! And if that happens, maybe they will start re-publishing Mike's entire catalogue (preferably some with Robert Gould cover art!)!

About bloody time! The History of the Runestaff, could make a great live action intro to Mike's fantasies. It's more traditionally structured than the wilder shores of Elric and Corum, or even the Bastable alternate futures. With lots of weird retro future tech and cultural references. A good place to start on a great oeuvre.

In case any of you all missed it, Mike & The Deep Fix released a new CD recently: it's a collection of songs related to the Second Ether books (particularly Blood: A Southern Fantasy) that's titled "Live at the Terminal Cafe". I've listened to it a bunch of times, and it's a good one. Zydeco prog, maybe? Melancholy, for sure.
Very fond of the cover of "St. James Infirmary" and the epic "Sam Oakenhurst's Story".
