This is our discussion of the short story....

"Homecoming" by Robin Hobb

From the anthology Epic: Legends of Fantasy edited by John Joseph Adams. See the Epic: Legends of Fantasy anthology discussion hub for more info on the anthology and pointers to discussion of its other stories.

"Homecoming" was originally published in Legends II, and reprinted in Hobb's The Inheritance & Other Stories.

Keith (keithdale) | 11 comments I have a copy of The Inheritance & Other Stories sitting on a shelf unread. I will be curious what you think of this one. My plan was to read it when I got around to reading the series "The Rain Wild Chronicles" which hopefully is sometime soon.

Silvana (silvaubrey) Oh I Loved this one a lot. I think it is one of the best in the book.

another example of how Hobb can write a story with a good character development from a vain and Easy to hate character to someone you want to root for.

aside from that, the world building of the Rainwilds is amazing. magical rainforest that is both dangerous and beautiful and literally changed people!

Silvana (silvaubrey) And Inheritance is an amazing collection and a must have for all Hobb fans. I like her better as Hobb but some of her Lindholm stories are good as well.

Brendan (mistershine) | 743 comments I liked this one. Good start to the collection. The disease aspects of being thrown into an unfamiliar swamp are probably undersold, but I enjoyed the way the author was constantly updating our views of the protagonist. 4 *s.

Silvana (silvaubrey) They had it easier despite the crazy voices and dragon scale since people could actually die in seconds if exposed to the toxic river water.

Shaitarn I've read this before, but it's always a pleasure to read Robin Hobb, who is undoubtedly one of my favourite authors. This story ties in to her Liveship Traders trilogy but it's not necessary to read those to enjoy this story.

The harshness of the situation is portrayed well, as is the resistance of some of the colonists as their situation gets worse. The protagonist's growth is realistically depicted. A thoroughly enjoyable tale.
