Maybe it is somewhat a defense of beer over there. That might explain it! I read it as a writer's journey. Personal writing is an individualistic activity, especially if it critiques its culture. The group and the individual are always at odds.
I'm glad to have read it again. It's rich!
I like the insight that "crimethink," the refusal to think dangerous thoughts, is "protective stupidity." That's real.
I like the idea that sanity is not statistical. I've always disagreed with relying on the business model (decision-making based on statistics) in education (humanities) and other human-centered endeavors.
The two minutes of hate remind me of my experiences in charismatic churches; the efforts to stir everyone up with love and joy are the opposite but the same in a way. "Doublethink" reminds me of being required to love everyone but hate everything/one that is outside the box.

Oddly, one thing that I took with me was the rant of 1/2 liter and 1 liter vs pints. Though I forgot the source. It funny because there is actually discussion as the EU requirements is to use metric. So markings to use pints on glasses have gone away. I wonder if Brexit vote is part over beer.
