A Brief Summary on Eat, Pray and LoveElizabeth Gilbert went through an early-onslaught midlife crisis around the period she clocked 30.
She had everything an educated, ambitious American woman was supposed to want (husband, house, successful career). But instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed with panic, grief, and confusion.
She went through a divorce, a crushing depression, another failed love, and the eradication of everything she ever thought she was supposed to be.
Her radical step to recover from all this gave birth to her memoirs titled EAT, PRAY & LOVE.....
Here are 6 Lessons I thought to Share with You from the Book:1. Loosing balance for the sake of love (relationship) may sometimes be a part of you living a balanced life (This was the old medicine Man's advise to Lizzy)
2. You receive what you ask for only if you actively participate in the process (Like the old italian joke Lizzy referenced about a poor man who goes to church almost everyday kneeling in front of a statue and asking to win a lottery without buying a ticket - You don't expect a magic of course)
3. Many at times comfort are found in familiar territories, not until things falls apart and we're ruined we may not experience an opportunity for growth (Lizzy described RUIN as a ROAD TO TRANSFORMATION)
4. Richard from Texas advised Lizzy to select her thoughts the same way she selects her clothes everyday. In life, there are forces you can't control but one greatest thing you have dominance upon is your personal thought, if you can't master your thought then you're in for a great trouble.
5. Happiness is a choice: From one of Lizzy's quote
“I keep remembering one of my Guru’s teachings about happiness. She says that people universally tend to think that happiness is a stroke of luck, something that will maybe descend upon you like fine weather if you’re fortunate enough. But that’s not how happiness works. Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it.....
6. My final lesson from this book is that it is never too late to discover yourself, or reinvent who you're supposed to be.
I'll round it off with this quote
“If you are brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting (which can be anything from your house to your bitter old resentments) and set out on a truth-seeking journey (either externally or internally), and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue, and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher, and if you are prepared – most of all – to face (and forgive) some very difficult realities about yourself … then truth will not be withheld from you.” Or so I've come to believe.” – Elizabeth Gilbert
NB: I also have some reservations about this book, but I'll prefer dwelling on the lessons learnt.I wouldn't suggest this book to an immature Christian.
