I really want to read this first then Atlas Shrugged!

me too!! I've always meant to read them but never get around to it! We can do this! as soon as I get a copy of the book, I'll probably set up some kind of reading schedule

Yes I think that's what we need! I found a copy of The Fountainhead at a thrift shop, & I know for sure I'm going to buy atlas shrugged since it's 1000+ pages Dx but I think a reading schedule will definitely help!

A buddy read is the impetus I need to read this one, so I'm joining! My copy's print is small and the words and lines are so close together. I hope I can manage with my eyesight!

@Vicki glad for you to join! I feel like this one I'll for sure finish since it's not as long, but I really want to read Atlas Shrugged too! I was 400+ pages into it then I stopped/: lol

How do we want to read this? My copy has a TINY font, and I mean small! Ugh...I know my eyes won't handle a lot of reading at one time. I have a Signet copy, CENTINNIAL EDITION, 694 pages, 704 if I include the Afterword.

It is divided into 4 parts plus an Afterword:
Part One: Peter Keating Pg. 15-200
Part Two: Ellsworth M. Toohey Pg. 201-389
Part Three: Gail Wynand Pg. 390-502
Part Four: Howard Roark Pg. 503-694
Afterword: Pg. 695-704

I went to the library to pick up my copy and they had the tiny print copy too! So my goal today is to run around and buy a copy with bigger print! lol

LOL I think that's a fantastic idea, but I have tons of copies of this edition. Ugh...

Are we officially putting this one off? LOL I read the introductory material on the first day but haven't had a chance to get back to it yet.

I totally forgot the date we were reading this, but I'm still up for it, what about everyone else?

I still want to read it so I bought the Kindle version because of the FINE print; however, I'm SO busy that if you two could wait until after school is out, that would be better for me by far. That'll be after May 26 if that works.

@Vicki that'll work! Especially since it's a massive book, I definitely want to read this & Atlas Shrugged after, we should set up a reading schedule, I really want to say I finished both of those books lol

LOL I know what you mean! I think we should set up a schedule too. I just know that with everything I have to do between now and the end of my school year (and when my retirement begins) that I'm going to be majorly busy. There's so much to do with paper work, tests, grades, and cleaning out my room that's built up over 25 years with lessons, books, cabinets, etc. to go through so I can leave it decent for the new teacher.

So May 26 ?

LOL How about we wait until May 27 or 28? I'll be doing all my last day business on the 26th.

I'm picking up my copy tomorrow - I came down with a cold
so....I didn't make it to the library like I'd hoped

but I'll need to start earlier - my oldest graduates from high school on the 25th and it's a whirlwind from there - so I'll start earlier :) but I'll stick to our schedule

How do we want to divvy up the reading? Each section is about 200 pages, but there are many words on those pages, so I think 200 a day would be way too much (for me).

How long do we want to take to read it?

I will look when I get home in about 20-30 minutes.

it's good so far, not as dense as I thought it would be although it's not light reading lol

Cameron(view spoiler)[ You can't help but feel bad for him. He's like Sherlock holmes without Watson. He needs a nice person up front to negotiate with the people looking for an architect to help sell his gruff style (hide spoiler)]

Roark(view spoiler)[ it's tough that he's so good at what he does but he isn't good with people either - or, at least, he doesn't play their games - he's the opposite of Keating. Great talent but no game. where Keating is okay talent but plays the game so others think he is amazing (hide spoiler)]

Still Part 1: 10 mini chapters

Keating(view spoiler)[ wow, Dominic seems like too much of a girl for him lol she seems better suited with Roark. But of course Keating wants her. I wonder if he will just leave Katherine waiting for him then (hide spoiler)]

Roark(view spoiler)[ I was sad that Cameron retired and was really sad when Roark couldn't find any work. He did get to work with an interesting guy that was, at least, willing to step out on the line a little.
but now he's been hired by one guy - a very very rich one. I wonder how this will all work out (hide spoiler)]

this is really interesting so far although I think it's hard to get the inflection of the conversations/phrasing right sometimes.....

Keating(view spoiler)[ what an ugly piece of work he is. How could he kill that guy - just because he was tired of waiting. that was awful. I'm glad it made him feel sick

and I know why he hates Roarke. Because he knows Roarke is actually a true architect. Keating knows he's nothing more than a fraud - that he copies other designs and uses his charm to get himself places but that he lacks actual talent to create something new. I don't like him at all (hide spoiler)]

Domonique(view spoiler)[ will be the ruin of him, is it just me that thinks so? Lol
she's just so indifferent to him. She'll never make him happy

but he's awful to keep stringing Catherine along. he should have let her go long ago... (hide spoiler)]

Roarke(view spoiler)[ Meh. he's not really growing on me. He's a bit too black and white. He must control, he MUST be understood. he's all just a bit...much. He's definitely the kind of guy that needs to work alone and does not play well with others.

that house that the wife ultimately wouldn't live in - that was just awful but I thought turning down the apartment housing thing was just silly. Why won't he work with the client? Why isn't he open to helping everyone slowly see that buildings can be different?

but I liked the description of his gas station and shopping store but he definitely needs someone to work with the public/potential clients for him (hide spoiler)]

I'm reading ACOTAR right now, I have to get to this soon though! How did you like the beginning?

It's pretty good, interesting and REALLY HEAVY.
Every conversation is just a chance to push the book's agenda! lol so it makes them a little odd
but it's really fascinating. I'm enjoying it!

I seriously doubt I'll get to this one this week...I'm sorry...but this is our last week of school and along with all the regular end-of-the-year stuff we teachers have to do, I have to still clean out 25 years of things I've accumulated. Guess I'm in denial because I've barely begun. LOL

awe, no worries!! AT all! My life is about to get a little nuttier with family arriving Wednesday (and then graduation Thursday)
and then prepping for Oregon
so I'm getting my reading in where I can ;D

Dominique(view spoiler)[ sooooo......Roarke is just too amazing that the world doesn't understand him and he's just so great that she won't allow people that don't fully see him or jobs that won't fully appreciate him (or people who hire him) to pay him. Toohey(view spoiler)[ what on earth? what am I missing? Why does he dislike Roarke so much? he seems to only give him what he hates

at least Dominique seems to have a purpose or ideal she's upholding. what is Toohey's problem?

Dominique(view spoiler)[....so her testimony to destroy his building instead of alter it....that was her plea for mercy? (hide spoiler)]

Toohey(view spoiler)[ I can't believe I read all those chapters and I still don't understand why he seeks to hurt Roark. It seems like doesn't think the world deserves him - much like Dominique - but also that he thinks Roark should also NOT give himself to the world. That he's almost angry at Roark for not conforming...but I don't understand yet, why Toohey is doing all this (hide spoiler)]
