A must-read for someone interested in the Holocaust. I started reading it, after I watched the movie. First Oskar Schindler, a member of the Nazi Party, used the war for profit and increase in the production for his steel factory, was indifferent. He needed workers. Then, after he observed the atrocities the Nazis performed and the murdering of innocent people, he changed his mind. He can save lives this way! So, he made a 'list. to get 1100 Jewish workers. It took him many bribes and he gave all his money to get everyone! I found the movie better first. Spielberg was a descendant, who showed up at his grave in Israel. I had to do some extra research about this brave and noble man. After he released his workers, toward the end of the war, he escaped to Argentina. But was never able to recover. When word reached the Jewish communities, those whose lives he saved, and their families helped him to get out and return.

I agree this is a wonderful book and Oskar Schindler should be made a saint. We often forget the people sometimes German, another reason why I like the Edelweiss Pirate series, they were German and did so much for the jewish communities that has not been recorded in many places.

Not an easy book to review or to categorize. Is it fiction, history, a bit of both. Keneally has clearly taken the historical account and stuck to it fairly closely, but has fictionalised the dialogue. It has also been overshadowed by Spileberg's remarkable film.
