I thought I'd share that the longlist for the 2017 Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel was revealed yesterday. The Ngaios are New Zealand's annual literary awards for excellence in crime, mystery, thriller, and suspense writing. There are three categories: Best Crime Novel, Best First Novel (crime/thriller debuts), and the new award for Best Non Fiction.

The Best Crime Novel Award has been won in the past by the likes of Paul Cleave, Liam McIlvanney, and Paul Thomas, among others.

This year's longlist is a really eclectic bunch, with crime novels that veer into other genres (historical, contemporary fiction, even a touch of romance), as well as more traditional detective fiction and thrillers.

Here's the longlist, announced on The Spinoff on Thursday:

Dead Lemons by Finn Bell by Finn Bell

Pancake Money (The Far South Series Book 2) by Finn Bell by Finn Bell

Spare Me the Truth by C.J. Carver by C.J. Carver

Red Herring by Jonothan Cullinane by Jonothan Cullinane

The Revelations of Carey Ravine by Debra Daley by Debra Daley

The Three Deaths of Magdalene Lynton (Ngaire Blakes, #1) by Katherine Hayton by Katherine Hayton

Presumed Guilty (Sasha Stace Book 3) by Mark McGinn by Mark McGinn

Marshall's Law (Marshall Grade, #2) by Ben Sanders by Ben Sanders

A Straits Settlement (Superintendent Le Fanu Mystery, #3) by Brian Stoddart by Brian Stoddart

The Last Time We Spoke by Fiona Sussman by Fiona Sussman

Lots of really interesting reads there!
