I've read the first book, and I really enjoyed it, yet there was something that made me not love it. I think it was mostly just book chemistry lol (this book's topic was something slightly out of my comfort zone).I love August, but I'm pretty indifferent about Kate. She just seems like she's a bitch just for the sake of being a bitch.
I felt the exact same way that you have! I really liked the first book but for some reason it wasn't my favorite. It's not that it was out of my comfort zone (I love that urban fantasy monsters type) but it was just missing something for me.
The second book fixed that all for me. It just connected me more to the characters. Kate definitely has some character development so I think you will like her more in the second book. I think you should try the second one when you get the chance!

I feel the exact same way. Currently in a book hangover because o We Were Liars but I'm slowly falling out of it. Just give the second book a chance!
