I looked back through my notes to no avail..."Fackelmann is mentioned in passing in Gately's internal monologue during the incident with the Hawaiian-shirted Canadians, just a quick reference to Fackelmann and T. Kite and DG living in and stripping luxury apartments. That appears to be the only mention prior to the current section. Can't give you a page number, because I don't have my paper copy handy. Kindle is great for searching for things like this, but does not have real page numbers. Best I can figure is somewhere around page 615, toward the end of the incident.
So, we find out what happened to Lenz fleeing with the shopping bags he snatched from the Asian women, and to Poor Tony after he concussed Kate Gompert. Karma, or what?
Point of order regarding spoilers in these discussions (ok, a bit late in the game, but we're not finished yet) - can we assume that anyone participating has read through the pages in the discussion topic?
I think that's a safe bet. I only read the discussions when I have finished that part. I must say I love the structure of jumping back and forth between Gatley and Hal. The first person POV with Hal here is very interesting, especially with how people are reacting to his facial expressions.
Thanks! I thought maybe I had missed something early on, but I trust your kindle search :)Part of the Hal-is-not-in-touch-with-his-face thing are the memories of Himself not recognizing that Hal was talking (and the wraith Himself claiming he wasn't talking). So who was mistaken? I keep waffling...
I agree about the Hal-POV section. There's not a lot of first-person in the book, and I find it really interesting that it's introduced here, particularly after DG's encounter with the wraith. Almost as if Hal is being given the opportunity to tell his own side of the story. That also factors in to what we now know about JOI's motivation for creating the Entertainment - to reach Hal, and serve as a vehicle for communication. Seems like he overshot his mark, though. Leaving Hal more or less catatonic would not exactly solve the problem of his being non-communicative.
