You should read Twelve Years a Slave. You should watch the movie its based on, too.

Actually, the 1984 movie made for TV version is much, much better than the 2013 movie that won the Academy. You can look for Solomon Northup's Odyssey, possibly reissued as Half Slave, Half Free, Here's a link for a $2.99 purchase; I saw it on either ASPRE or the History Channel about a year ago. The Roots remake was produced by LeVar Burton who played the young Kunte Kinte in the 1977 version. I liked the 1977 version better and have my own personal copy. One of the reasons for the remake was that additional research beyond the time of Haley suggested that the topography and life of his African village was much different than originally described by Haley's work.
