Jazz Bashara is a criminal.

Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent.

Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she's stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself—and that now, her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first.

I had mixed feelings about The Martian, but did mostly like it, so am excited to see how this one fares.

35% (view spoiler)[ that was a little tech heavy, but i still understood for the most part what was going on. I really like Jazz as a character. She is sarcastic and funny. I knew that this plan wouldn't pan out perfectly, pretty interested to see what happens next. (hide spoiler)]

80%(view spoiler)[ really loving this. It's filled with science and all about welding, but the explanation is done well enough that I understand. Previously i knew nothing about welding. But it's definitely not anywhere near boring. Jazz keeps everything interesting. (hide spoiler)]

1/4: (view spoiler)[I was immediately hooked by this story. It had such an action-packed beginning and I liked how the reader is thrust into the heart of this world and Jazz's life.

Still loving this just as much but I'm a little confused with who Jazz is narrating her story too. She explains life on Artemis as though to someone not from there, which makes me think this is aimed at a fictional reader as well as a real-world one. (hide spoiler)]

2/4: (view spoiler)[So much political and scientific explanation that, honestly, just keeps going over my head a little bit. Still loving all I'm managing to follow, though. (hide spoiler)]

3/4: (view spoiler)[Jazz is such a good character. I think this is really Weir's forte as I adored Mark Watney, from The Martian, as well.
She's a criminal and completely flawed, but that only makes her all the more lovable. (hide spoiler)]

4/4: (view spoiler)[That ending was so intense! I kept waiting for Jazz to die on every other page. It did have an element of one thing after another consistently going wrong, which felt almost cartoonish after a while, but it seemed to work well with the sometimes humorous tone of the entire book. Overall, 4.5/5 stars from me. (hide spoiler)]

Up to chapter 4 (view spoiler)[ A very cool world so far. Jazz is a very different heroine and I like it, she's a criminal and totally unapologetic. I do think that Trond might have some bad intentions with what he's asked Jazz to do and is hiding something. (hide spoiler)]

Up to chapter 7 (view spoiler)[ A lot of this last part went over my head, which I found with The Martian too. When it gets too technical, I tend to skim it and just try and get the general gist of what's going on. I liked the beginning better. I wonder what will happen now Dale caught Jazz, although they obviously have some sort of history. (hide spoiler)]

Up to chapter 11 (view spoiler)[ Okay, so ZAFO is basically a huge money making scheme for the moon and Ngugi is in on it. Kinda disappointed, I liked her! The story between Dale and Tyler and Jazz is actually very sad, but I would not forgive Dale at all. Tyler embracing his sexuality and Dale discovering love are both great things but they both betrayed Jazz in doing so and it really wouldn't have been that hard to break things off with Jazz before this. They are not excuses for breaking someone's heart. (hide spoiler)]

Finished! I don't think it quite had the brilliance of The Martian, but I loved this and I think this is one that could very easily become a fantastic series.

Chapter 5 (view spoiler)[Okay, so for some reason this all seems way too easy for Jazz, it seems like she's going to pull this off without a problem and there's 2/3rds of the book left and I'm just a little bit scared ! (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 10 (view spoiler)[This book, like the martian, is so very tech heavy that there are entire portions of texts that I don't understnad, but unlike the martian, where I know the reason and purpose behind everything, there's not much I know. I like Jazz, and I don't trust the administrator, but this does not live up to the hype of the martian (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 15 (view spoiler)[Svoboda is adorable and Jazz doesn't deserve him. I think Jazz is kind of an unlike-able character that one does like. I like the characters in this book though, they are pretty interesting and well developed, I liked the letters to and fro aspect too! it's very very interesting! (hide spoiler)]

I hope she completes the mission so she can get her dream life. Who is she exchanging letters with on Earth? And what was the big mistake she made that disappointed her father? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Jazz almost succeeded. And almost got caught but Dale let her go. Rudy is totally on to her but he doesn’t have enough evidence. Who killed Trond? Now Jazz is in danger. We learn the letters guy is her connect. Wonder if it’s the new guy they let into their smuggling biz.. (hide spoiler)]
Ch 8

(view spoiler)[The mob is the culprit to all this and the Administrator is low key in on it. Of course its up to Jazz to save the day. I hope she can get the job done. Also is there a romance happening between Svodoba and Jazz? (hide spoiler)]
Ch 12

(view spoiler)[The plan almost killed everyone, but Jazz sacrificed herself and saved Artemis. I kind of wish Jazz actually died. It would've been really sad, but a lot more moving. It was kinda cliche that she almost died but actually lived. Glad her and Svodoba are together and that she reconciled with her dad (hide spoiler)]
