Josue Nava For my 5th entry in Goodreads, I read a book that was highly suggested by a friend, the Winter’s Bones by Daniel Woodrell. If you plan on reading this book please read no further. It was grim, difficult to read but such a beautiful story. The story takes place in the Missouri Ozarks(hillbilly country), our main character Ree Dolly is put into a pretty shitty situation. After Deputy Baskin, who she knew by name, had given her little siblings Sonny and Ashlee a ride from the bus stop. Grated unwelcoming by Ree she asked what he wanted and told the boys to not riding with the law. The deputy was there to inform Ree and company that her father Jessup, who is a top-notch crack manufacturer, was a no-show for his scheduled court date and placed the family house and property up as collateral. Faced with losing everything she sets out to find her father by following his trail into the drug world where people are bound by loyalty and violence. She starts off by looking for her uncle teardrop and eventually contacts the kingpin. But with no luck, she is given a week to find her father dead or alive by the bondsman who will claim the property by then. Desperate she seeks out the crime boss and severely beaten by three women. She was rescued by teardrop letting her attackers know that she will not be asking any more questions and will not mention what took place that day. Later the same three women take her to an undisclosed pond where she sees her father under water. By means of a chainsaw, Ree takes his arms to show the deputy her father was killed therefore forfeiting the bond. The bondsman shows up and giver her the money portion of the bond that was put up by an unknown person. She assures Sonny and Ashlee she won’t leave. The Winter’s Bone is one of the best books I’ve read, top ten for sure. I heard that it's also a movie, so when I get a chance I'll watch it.
