This is the story of Evan Smoak, a man who is known as the nowhere man — the guy that desperate people call to get them out of desperate situations. The story unfolds as Evan tries to help a beautiful gambler who has a huge mark on her back. Unfortunately the mark quickly shifts to Evan for helping her. Along the way, Evan’s backstory also unfolds. This is a suspense book so can’t give away too much. It was a compelling read/listen and I will definitely get the next book in the series.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments I have always thought that this book looks good and it gets great reviews, but I just don’t want to start a series.

Do you think it could be read as a stand alone?

annapi | 5517 comments This is book 1, so yes it can be read as a standalone. I've read only the first two, but I have a feeling that this can quickly get away from the author. The second book was not as good as the first IMO, and I don't think it has much room to go very far as a series. I gave book 1 a rating of 3.5, and book 2 I rated a 3.

Right now, I think it's just planned as a trilogy. If they do continue, it would need to be a series of stand-alones with Evan as the main character but different adventures. Similar to many of the these types of books --- you don't necessarily need to read them in order. However, I do think you need the back-story of the first book in this particular instance.

@Nicole R --- I saw your post about all the RL stuff going on for you, this is a good escapist read in the suspense genre. There are some funny bits, but also some graphic violence.

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I didn't realize this wasn't a standalone! Didn't it just come out like last year? I remember a bunch of hype about it.

Somehow this came off my TBR. This review has put it back on.
