Easy topic this time, folks -- please nominate a book by your favorite mystery/crime/thriller author of 2017.

Once again, as a reminder,

1. do NOT nominate your own book
2. do NOT have your publicist nominate your book
3. if you nominate the winning book, you are the moderator for the discussion. If you don't want to lead the discussion, don't nominate a book.

Carol (carolfromnc) | 15283 comments I nominate Rage by Zygmunt Miloszewski.

Rage (Teodor Szacki, #3) by Zygmunt Miloszewski

message 4: by Bill (new)

Bill Do you mean authors I read in 2017 even though they might not have published anything in 2017 or authors who had a book published in 2017?

message 5: by Nancy, Co-Moderator (new)

Nancy Oakes (quinnsmom) | 10132 comments Mod
favorite author of anything you read in 2017; not necessarily authors who published in 2017. Sorry.

Bill Nancy wrote: "favorite author of anything you read in 2017; not necessarily authors who published in 2017. Sorry."

That's ok. It's what I thought, just wanted to make sure... Now for my nomination -

Fer-de-Lance by Rex Stout

message 7: by Eva (new)

Eva (bookworm_eve) Hard to choose between The Purity of Vengeance by Jussi Adler-Olsen or Birdman by Mo Hayder.

Think... think...

Going for:

Birdman (Jack Caffery, #1) by Mo Hayder

Oh, Nero Wolfe! One of my favorites!

message 9: by Suzy (new)

Suzy (goodreadscomsuzy_hillard) | 702 comments I agree - hard to choose. I could nominate an old favorite Tony Hillerman, but I'm going with authors who delighted me with 1930's Hollywood, Renee Patrick, a husband and wife team. I nominate Design for Dying, the first in the Edith Head/Lillian Frost mysteries.

message 10: by Linda (new)

And since I enjoyed his The Book of Forgotten Authors so much this year, I'm going to nominate Christopher Fowler's Full Dark House, the first in his Bryant and May series.

The books are so much fun. And when you have a crime-fighting duo named after a brand of matches, well, that's a clever author!

gathering feather organiceden | 1594 comments So many great stories! Look forward to the lineup!

message 30: by Peter (new)

Peter (74765525) | 3 comments I nominate Andrew Pessin's The Irrationalist. Did Rene Descartes die of natural causes or was he killed? You may think this is a problem only of interest to philosophy majors, but in Andrew Pessin's hands it is a fascinating murder mystery and like all good mysteries, the author metes out important details in a manner that keeps the reader turning the pages. In addition to telling a good story, Pessin has so mastered the details of the world Descartes inhabited that the reader never feels confused or lost. Check out the reviews to see if others don't agree.

As to all-time favorite? Why, of course Edgar Allan Poe, Murder in the Rue Morgue, the novella that started the whole thing, the Sherlock Holmes story avant le mot.

message 35: by Fred (new)

Fred (fredderoche) I'd like to agree with "The Woman in Cabin 10, by Ruth Ware" listed above. Thanks

message 36: by William (new)

William Even though I read this recently, it's so excellent, so noir in every way.

Sins of the Fathers by Lawrence Block, first of the Matthew Scudder series. ( I would nominate his masterpiece, "8 Million Ways to Die", but that's number 5 in the series)

Okay -- I'll finish the summary in message 13 and then for sure we have enough books to go to the poll. In the meantime, please hold off on making any more nominations until I see exactly how many titles we have.

back soon
