I wish I could remember. It's been over 12 years or so since I read this book. I do remember loving it at the time but can't recall the answer to that. I almost wonder if it was one of those things left a mystery that only Sugar knows. ;)

Joshua (ithildins) That's a good question. Like Heather wrote above, though, I can't remember - it has been several years since I read it

Seth Birnbaum It was definitely a miscarriage. Her plan to throw herself down the stairs must have done the trick.

Narci Drossos Yes. She was touring the new factory and it happened in the ladies lavatory/toilet which was basically a hole in ground. She hemorrhaged and his daughter was with her, while he walked around flirting with his new intended.

This is such an amazing book. I came by it via a book review in The New York Times in 2002, written by Janet Maslin. I had been given the novel earlier, glanced at the jacket and its synopsis, thought - nah - then read it and WOW. Unforgettable. In fact, I read it AND listened to it on audible. Profound and ahead of its time.
