Good review Jack, I particularly like Pendant's Corner! I'm undecided whether to give Ali Smith a shot. I keep going to pick up one of her books from the library but always hesitate.

The Great Chain of UnbeingSince I reviewed this for the Science Fiction and Fantasy magazine Interzone (to be published in May 2018) I shall not be posting about it on my blog for about a year.
It was good though.

Thanks Ellen but speaking as a pedant; Pendant's corner?
I think Smith may be an acquired taste. I enjoyed her "How to be Both" though.
Tarissa wrote: "Great reviews you've written for both titles. Thanks for sharing all about them!"Thanks for this, Tarissa.

Oh the irony! Autocorrect is the bane of my life, almost spurted out my tea when I read it, so funny! Moral of the tale, always double check :) As for Smith, I think I might give her a go...

Added Jericho Sleep Alone to my list :) I like the idea of reading of a group of people in Scotland, I have never encountered in other books.
Melanie wrote: "Added Jericho Sleep Alone to my list :) I like the idea of reading of a group of people in Scotland, I have never encountered in other books."Melanie,
Jericho's life in general seems to me not too unlike those of other Scots of the time but the Jewish angle does add a different dimension: like looking at Scottishness through a distorting lens. (Mind you, is there any other kind?)
My review of The Thirteenth Disciple by Lewis Grassic Gibbon (writing under his real name J Leslie Mitchell) is at https://jackdeighton.co.uk/2018/05/26...

Good review, Jack. This has been on my radar as Orkney has many selkie/mermaid stories and I’m interested in new takes on old tales. I was interested by your Scots language comments too - my neighbour says ‘besom’ for women who are nosy, perhaps meddling, but certainly not any more than that. Otherwise, I might have to rethink some of the folk she gossips about! ;)

Good review Jack. I've been collecting mermaids since childhood. I'm wondering if there is a book prior to this story that elaborates a bit more on the mermaid legend?

Your neighbour's take on 'besom' is the same as mine. No loose morals implied.
Ellen wrote: "Good review Jack. I've been collecting mermaids since childhood. I'm wondering if there is a book prior to this story that elaborates a bit more on the mermaid legend?"Logan's previous novel also had an aquatic setting but didn't feature selkies or mermaids as such.

Interesting review about the Gloaming, I am not going to read it, I really disliked Gracekeepers too much.

I know what you mean. I would say The Gloaming is less derivative than The Gracekeepers, though. Or at least derivative in different ways.
Supercute FuturesMillar was born in Scotland so counts for this Read Scotland challenge.
I'm reviewing this book for Interzone 277 - due out in September - so won't be publishing it on my blog till this time next year.

Thanks for the helpful review Jack, I keep swithering about this one - I love science fiction and have read and enjoyed most of Chris Brookmyre's books - but have yet to be convinced that I'll like this one.

Thanks, John.
I didn't take to Brookmyre's previous SF novel Bedlam but that was mainly due to it being set in a virtual reality - one step too far for me to suspend disbelief. I think he's better when he's writing in the crime area, but even when he's writing those he can stretch belief a bit far.

Interrupted JourneyScottish Book 31 this year. My review is at https://jackdeighton.co.uk/2018/12/16...
Well done on all these reads, through you I found that list of 100 Scottish books, I shall tackle a few of those next year.
Melanie wrote: "Well done on all these reads, through you I found that list of 100 Scottish books, I shall tackle a few of those next year."I've got one more Scottish book lined up before the year ends.
I find the 100 list a bit hit and miss - too many crime novels for a start - but there are some gems in there I hadn't known about.
