I'm making it through, although things keep coming up to get me off track. That doesn't help with trying to remember all the characters. But I like it - it's satisfyingly epic and scratching that itch :)
I found it a little bit slow for the first 2/3, but actually never felt that was a problem. It certainly had me hooked from the start. By the end, I was *glad* I had a lot of backstory on the characters, as they are well written and a large part of the appeal. Didn't find it too hard to keep track of the characters, though a few times it took a bit to remember.Story wise, it is set up beautifully. Quite a tangled web of alliances and motives. Plenty to pick through. I've read elsewhere that we get more central female characters in the next instalment, and the pace picks up overall. Sneaking suspicion (and hope) that (view spoiler).
Yes I agree while it was a slow start I eventually found myself getting into the characters and was glad for the backstory. Once the story got moving for me I didn't want to put it back down. For me it did take a little to get the hang of the characters and all the connections. By the end I am very interested to see where this leads and what happens to these characters.
I just wrote my review for Malice so I'll include that link here:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
While I agree that it is a slow start I like that in a book when it is the first novel in a series. It shows me that the author will not be rushing the world building or the character development.
Finally finished the book and loved it. It was difficult to keep track of all the characters in this story. The story will definitely have many different places it can go from here. I agree with the comment about Cywen coming back somewhere in the story line. She seemed to be a huge part of the development of Corban.

I liked a LOT about it, the story being set up, some of the characters...
I thought parts of it were a bit rough, but it seems to be setting things up for the series quite nicely!
