Fantasy Buddy Reads discussion

This is a Buddy Read for The Bands of Mourning by Brandon Sanderson starting August 9, 2018.

I'm starting this one a bit early. Want to be sure to have it finished before I need to start Days of Blood and Starlight.

I think I will start this one too then :) I finished my last audiobook yesterday and was wondering which one I should start next, could as well do this one!

I haven't even finished shadows of self yet 🙈

You'll get there, Angela! And I will still be around to chat. I just have both of these on audio planned really close together.

I'll probably start when I'm done with Firefight because I'm reading them both physical.

Annoying, but hilarious. And it really was good for it to be postponed, since Wax is still a bit off and not really sure what he feels or thinks about things.

I do love the progression of the Wax/Steris relationship. I'm glad that he actually does like her, even if he can never love her in the way he loved Lessie. Them searching through ledgers was really cute. And she's excited by flying through the streets, so that's a good fit.

Wayne and MeLaan...that's an interesting pair.

I'm really curious to see what they find out about the missing spike, Suit, and the Bands of Mourning. And I'm wondering if the bandits had anything to do with this or not. (hide spoiler)]

I ended up finishing this on my long drive yesterday. And I need the last book now.

Part 1 (view spoiler)[At first I thought 'Hui, the wedding is happening!', but of course not :D
But honestly I'm not sure what I think of Wayne stopping it from happening and I haven't expected it at all! His intentions might be good, but I don't think it's his right to interfere here... And is he stopping it because he want Wax to be truely ready to marry someone or is it because he don't want him to marry Steris? I would hate it, if it's the second reason.
On the other hand Wax really doesn't seem to be ready... So maybe it wasn't a bad thing? Hmmm... I'm not sure!

I'm a little relieved that the Bands of Mourning are these bracelets worn by the Lord Ruler, the title scared me a little because I thought somerhing terrible and sad is going to happen. Not that this is a guarantee it won't, but I'm a little relieved 😅

I'm looking forward what will happen next! I already expected that we will see Wax's sister after reading the Prologue and I'm so curious about her.
I'm glad that Steris accompany them, I love them all as a group together :) They are all a little mad and therefore even more loveable! (hide spoiler)]

I feel sorry for Steris because clearly Wax isn't ready. And I hope Wayne did what he did for the right reasons, but you never know with him...

Chapter 7. I love Steris! (view spoiler)[So cute that she started carrying steel around in case Wax needs it! And mixed it with cod liver oil instead of whiskey because it's good for his health 😂 bless her.

I'm hoping Marasi and Wayne get together... Is that odd? He always listens to her feelings and she seems to understand his weird ways. XD

I don't think it's odd, I think what you said is exactly what was conveyed since the beginning of this book, that Wayne and Marasi work really well together, all their differences aside. Still I'm not sure there's a relationship hinted or a friendship/partnership? Wax seems to become a little more mature and who knows, maybe he will settle down even more with the blooming relationship with Steris? Might be that he leave more and more of their work to Wayne and Marasi? But I can totaly see them as a pair as well ;) There's MeLaan still, sure their 'encounter' was very causual and she isn't even human, but I still like them together as well. (hide spoiler)]

45% (view spoiler)[ I loved the scene at the hotel :D I think this was my favourite scene so far! The poor woman! All of them except Marasi acted like they escaped a loony bin! Wayne with his peanuts and exchange offers, Steris... well being Steris with her notebook and a disasters-avoidance-plan, Wax just destroying the window latches so he can jump out and half Man/half Woman-MeLaan 😂 (hide spoiler)]

I finished part one yesterday.
(view spoiler)[I didn't really like wayne's chapter, couldn't get into it.
What i did like, however, was the wedding scene (prior to the flood) between steris and wax. I'm liking steris more and more! Her planning and back-up things are too funny. The scene where she freaked about having to pack in 4 hours was also funny! I'm the exact opposite, but i know a lot of people like her 🤗

Steris (view spoiler)[ I'm not shocked and honestly I'm not sure she really changed at all, but feeling more secure in Wax's company and shows us how she really is? I mean so far we haven't seen a lot of her. But I'm only halfway through, so maybe there're more shocking developements to come. ;) (hide spoiler)]

And then she was concerned about Marasi being with these stange people, but Marasi pushed her out of the room and asked for detailed reports on grave-robbing. It was beautiful.

Steris is the cutest. I love how she feels more comfortable around Wax ad vice-versa. I also love the fact that both of them are GIANT NERDS who get excited by detective work and flying. They are ADORABLE.

1. I am doing a re-read but I'd just like to note that I called Telsin being an antagonist as soon as she shot the guard the FIRST TIME I read it, thank you. I didn't peg her as the primary antagonist, though.

2. I had COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN that MeLaan and Wayne had sex. I honestly don't think it's likely to go anywhere but I was surprised at how completely I forgot about it.

3. I really, really REALLY love the developing magitech. AN ECONOMY WITH MAGIC AS A COMMODITY OMG. (hide spoiler)]

Finished part 2 today!
While i was often struggling to pick the first two books back up, I'm actually looking forward to continuing with this one, which is nice.

84% This mind sound stupid, but I'm a little scared to finish this 😂 a.) because of the cliffhanger and the release date of book 4 and b.) because I don't want this to end! (view spoiler)[ I don't trust Wax' sister... She's crazy and I can't shake the feeling that she's on the uncle's side... (hide spoiler)]

I'll finally start this tonight... it's the BR I'm furthest behind on... it's also the one I'm most interested to re-read. now that I know the things I missed the first time...

Did my re-read yesterday, it went so fast... some of the events in this one (view spoiler)[ like the airship (hide spoiler)] I thought happened earlier in this cycle, but here we are on the last released book...

This book has SO MANY Cosmere Connections... more than any other book I can think of, by size (Stormlight Archive probably has more, but they're 3x as long)... (view spoiler)[

1) K&N in the broadsheet looking for talking metal = (view spoiler)[Krissalla and Nazh, looking for Nightblood... and other talking swords from Warbreaker, I guess... (hide spoiler)]

2) The Terris woman at the dance, is (view spoiler)[Khrissalla, again... she's from White Sands, and was doing research for the Ars Arcanum at the back of the book that explains magic systems... I hope she pops up like this more often in other series... (hide spoiler)]

3) Hoid, obviously, giving Wax the coin...

On re-read, Trell was much more clearly an otherworldly entity... between the conversation with Harmony, and the murder of Suit, and discussion of just destroying the whole planet because it was too dangerous... (hide spoiler)]

Lord Ruler: On re-read, this is so much more obvious (view spoiler)[that it's Kelsier / Spook... I mean... the last line of the book is SURVIVE... (hide spoiler)]

Marasi: (view spoiler)[is clearly going to end up with Alec... I missed that on my first read as well... I'm interested to see Wayne & the Kandra continue their relationship, as well... I love that Kandra character... (hide spoiler)]

Lost Metal: (view spoiler)[ I remember all the speculation that it's the return of Atium, and it makes sense... but on this re-read, I'm curious if it's the explosive metal that powers the airships... I just did a coppermind search, and this ettmetal has been dubbed harmonium by Sanderson, so it seems likely (hide spoiler)]

Era 3: (view spoiler)[ this re-read has me excited about the NEXT trilogy, which is still like 5-7 years away... it's to be set in pseudo-1970s, and follows a Nicroburst FBI-type computer analyst, and the first book has the team hunting down a Mistborn serial killer... Nicrobursts can supercharge other people's Misting abilities for a short time... the opposite of Nicrosil, which is what wipes out metal reserves instantly...

All the talk about lost metal alloys had me anticipating the next evolution of the magic system... the South Scadrian tech has me excited too... this all feels like a precursor to the Sci-fi trilogy down the line... (hide spoiler)]

I don't think this ends on a cliffhanger... the most cliffhangery element of it all is connected to Secret Histories... the novella that IS available to read next...

That's why you're supposed to read Secret History AFTER this... because one way or another, something is going to be spoiled, and Secret History is much more complicated, and Cosmere-dense... there are some elements of Secret History that we have next to no context for yet...

(view spoiler)[It's Wax that jumped to conclusions and said Lord Ruler... I'm not 100% sure it's Kelsier... it could also be Spook... altho I wonder why they're not together... Spook was the Lord Mistborn, who ruled over Elendel for over 100 years before stepping down because his long life was affecting his decisions... Wax references some about that here, with the book that suggests making hemalurgic spikes from old people...

Working with Kelsier, they found a way to access all Mistborn and Feruchemical abilities, and the compounding that occurs is what facilitates immortality on Scadrial... but maybe Spook and Kelsier went their separate ways at some point, like Gallodon and Raodan do after Elantris is over... since Gallodon is a worldhopper in Way of Kings...
