In many ways this is the perfect true crime book; well written, with a great author who was involved in the case since the beginning and had a close personal connection to the criminal. Ann Rule is able to provide us with a chilling look at not only the horrors of Bundy's crimes, but also the reality of realizing someone you have loved and trusted is a monster.

Rule's connection with Bundy is an invaluable part of this story, how close and safe she felt around Bundy is a testament to how powerful his influence over people truly was. It's a fascinating look at the actual, tangible monsters that may be right beside us

I read this book some months after my roommate had and knew how viscerally it affected her, leaving her double-checking the locks on her windows and the empty spaces of her closet before going to bed, and I was surprised I was not equally alarmed after reaching the halfway point of the book. While I found the accounts of girls being abducted just a few meters from their doors terrifying and it did break me of wearing headphone while making the return trip through campus from late nights at the library, I was still able to sleep easy but that ended after I read the descriptions of attacks in Florida.
