Kelly | 1016 comments The Namesake is a beautiful novel about the Ganguli family. The parents came to the United States from India. They soon had a family and their children do not necessary see things the same way as them. One the differences is related to the name of their son. They named him Gogol, after a Russian author. Gogol tries to get away from this name and even changes it legally.

Gogol's parents miss India and its traditions. Gogol and his sister balance their Indian heritage with being American. As they grow up they understand their parents choices better. The characters are very relatable and it was a worthwhile read.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments This is one that I didn’t particularly like —- but I read before GR, so I don’t remember exactly why.

I think I've read most of them too, and I loved The Namesake, one of my favorites. Sorry, JoLene, lol.

martin eden | 8 comments I liked it too. I could easily identify with Gogol, not easy to be a child of immigrants. I also liked the passages about the importance of names. When I read a book, I pay careful attention to the characters' names. It's like in real life, I think that names should be carefully chosen.
