Fan fics. "Real" writing or not?

There was a debate going on in one of my groups about whether or not fan fics could be considered worthy of being considered real writing.
My opinion is yes. It doesn't matter if it's a full length novel or a short story, I feel fan fiction is still writing.

It's definitely real writing. It's just unmarketable because of copyright issues. But, I think it's best used for practice. Since it uses established worlds and characters, it makes it easy to just jump in and write.
