Welcome to our first reading challenge discussion! Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis was an amazing book for its creativity and Christian message. The idea of how God would work out his presence on other planets was well done and fascinating. I loved the characters and the people of Mars so much! The plot was really fun as well. So, what did you think?

Justin Coogle | 91 comments Whoa wait, did you already read it. I thought we were supposed to start on April 9th?!

The Review Circle starts the 9th, but you can start reading this now. I had read this once before, but it only takes me a couple of days to finish a book. No hurry to anyone else, though. The thread will stay open the whole time.

Stoney deGeyter | 134 comments I've read the book before, but just started reading again for this group. I, too, thought we were going to read it together as part of this challenge, and maybe discuss chapters along the way?

We can do that! This is my first reading challenge in GoodReads, so I am happy to follow what works best for the group. The facebook reading group I have been part of was pretty much a free-for-all. I'll post some specific questions for chapter one in a couple of days.

Sooo, over a week later... Here are some questions for the first two chapters: What do you think about Ransom as a character? What grabs you about the beginning? What are your first impressions of Weston and Devine?

The first time I read this book I thought the begin was fine, but it certainly didn't prepare me the fantasy/sci-fi aspects of the rest of the book. I enjoyed it more this time around. I have never been able to form a good mental picture of the characters, but I love their personalities. I like the mystery and questions that form in my mind right away to draw me along. What do you think?

Stoney deGeyter | 134 comments This is probably my fourth or fifth time reading it over the past 30 years, but I tend to skim over character descriptions. I don't think I ever thought about the character, just enjoyed the journey he was on. So much of the book is exposition from his point of view so I would say my view of the book is the same as my view of Ransom. It's his journey.

I think there was enough differences between the other two characters for me to make a distinction.

I'm a little over halfway through the book (it's short!) and find it enjoyable to re-read the world Lewis created.

It is short, but it works well since we are doing the review circle as well. I think the journey and descriptions are my favorite parts, so I am glad I am not the only one who has paid less attention to the characters descriptions.
