Challenge Corner discussion

Based on "The Walking Dead" graphic novels/comic books and the series starring Andrew Lincoln ("Teachers", "This Life and Love", and "Love Actually") and written/produced by Frank Darabont whose previous credits include "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile", this is a new trilogy of books written by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga, author of "Perfect Victim" and "Shattered". Set in the world created by Robert Kirkman, this standalone trilogy is fast-paced, action-packed storytelling about the lengths some men will go to survive. With new characters, new storylines and with the same in-depth character-based plotting that has made the television series such an immediate hit, this trilogy of novels is sure to be a hit with those who love zombies and those who have loved the TV series and comic books.


In the Walking Dead universe, there is no greater villain than The Governor. The despot who runs the walled-off town of Woodbury, he has his own sick sense of justice: whether it’s forcing prisoners to battle zombies in an arena for the townspeople’s amusement, or chopping off the appendages of those who cross him. The Governor was voted “Villain of the Year” by Wizard magazine the year he debuted, and his story arc was the most controversial in the history of the Walking Dead comic book series. 20%: (view spoiler)[It's a pretty interesting audio book.. but I'm kind of bored right now. The pacing just seems off or I'm in a mood while listening to this at work. I'll blame work. I'm sad that Bobby died though. I also thought this was going to be like the show.. or the comics. Never read the comics but I've seen the show.. I'm confused. (hide spoiler)]

100%: (view spoiler)[Okay, I will admit the pace of this book was all over the place. The narrator sounded so monotone(d)? that I was drifting in and out of paying attention to everything. I can't believe Phillip was killed or that Penny, who is still a zombie is still being kept "captive" in a way. I also can't believe that Brian is the governor. My mind is blown. I hope that the second book is a lot better and has a much faster pace. (hide spoiler)]

I enjoyed the twists. Having both read about the governor and seen the show through him it was fascinating to see the differences. A bad narrator for an audio book can ruin a book experience for me. Sorry this has a crummy one. Glad I am just reading it myself lol.

Haha yeah! My library didn’t have the books available until forever for the physicals at least. The audios were available right then and there. I think I have the first 5 right now.

There is never enough time to read all the books. We need to be able to just freeze time once in a while to get through them. Hehe.

Omg yes! At work I try to knock out my audios but then I get sucked into more every day. I have a ton of physical books to get through too. I was supposed to knock those out over the weekend and I ended up watching movies mostly and reading kindle books 😂😂

Haha. I have had those weekends! And I am always reading the 'wrong' types of books. I own enough books to never touch a library for at least a couple years, yet where to I go almost weekly? Yep...Guilty
I wish I could listen to audiobooks at work.

Listening at work has been a life saver!! It’s so boring sometimes. I need my audio books - they somehow make me focus more.

Agreed. I am really picky about audiobooks but I am finding I often like one playing when I am on my computer (such as right now lol), or cleaning, driving,etc.

Chapters 1-4
(view spoiler)[I love the dystopian genre (tv shows, movies, video games, books, etc.) and bonus points are given for zombie apocalypses. I enjoy the world of The Walking Dead, so I assumed that I would enjoy this novel. I always found the Governor to be the perfect character to hate. I am looking forward to getting more insight into his background, and what happened to his daughter.

I like how this book starts in the early day of the zombie apocalypse. In the tv show/graphic novels, the story stats after civilization is basically gone. This book shows the early days when the fall of humanity wasn’t a definite yet. People still had hope, and were traveling to places that the government claimed were safe zones. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 5-10
(view spoiler)[It is kind of creepy the whispers Phillip gets in his head that urge him to do violent things. It just shows how he was never a good guy turned bad. He was never innately “good.” However, he does have a soft spot for his deceased wife and for Penny.
This seems kind of dangerous, though, because it seems like he would do anything to protect his daughter. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 11-15
(view spoiler)[I really liked the new group that Philip, Brian, Nick, and Penny found. I was nervous while reading this chapters because I knew something was going to go wrong. At first I thought it was going to be something with the father’s death, but it was worse than that. Any respect I had for Philip is gone. He didn’t have much to start with because I know he turns into the Governor, but him raping April confirms that he was never a good person. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 3 - (view spoiler)[ They are in a suburban area and Phillp, Penny, Brian and a few friends are in Wiltshire Estates and they are scARED! It is like a rabbit or any other prey, right? Being hunted, all of the time. Constant adrenaline, no rest. Argh. They have decided to stay here for a while versus going to the city where the news says there is safety. (hide spoiler)]



Chapter 8

(view spoiler)[ WHAT? Bobby is dead, more than once too. I thought he was going to be the handicapped friend that puts everyone in danger for the rest of the book. Killed by Eddie Munster too. Just ain't cool. (hide spoiler)]



Chapter 14

(view spoiler)[ Oh no. Things are not going well, even for a book where the characters are running from human hunting zombies. David, the father of April and Tara dies, while stating some words that evil is coming or so sort of speech that is obvious. He is a "biter" and attacks Tara. I don't remember anything stating that David was bitten. Maybe it will come out later. But things are tense. (hide spoiler)]



Chapter 17

(view spoiler)[Well this isn't a fairy tale! Phillip raping April and he is losing his mind. Not that I think I wouldn't lose mine but he is doing bad, bad things. Argh, daughter shot. I think it is the end of Phillip. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ Yuck, what a mess...literally and figuratively. I think I would have given up if my daughter died. Nick dead, Phillip dead. People's minds cannot handle this much stress....well except the quiet one that no one looks to...Brian (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 16-19
(view spoiler)[I want there to be a twist at the end. Something like Brian is the governor all along, and he just took his brother’s name. I think that would make the boring parts of this book worth it.
However, things got a bit more exciting (but also sad) in chapters 18 and 19. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 20-End
(view spoiler)[This was an interesting book. I guess I never really gave much thought to the Governor’s past before. I might have assumed that he had always been in Woodbury. However, I like the twist where Brian actually is the one who becomes the Governor and not Philip. I predicted that twist, but I said I’d give this book more credit if that was the case, and so I will. Overall, it probably isn’t a book I’d want to read again, but it was decent enough for one read.
