Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Hello fellow FOFers!
We have noticed a lack of action going on in here, and therefore have decided to do a bit of a challenge to spice things up.

This challenge is a kind of modified BINGO game, and will run from May 1 to July 31. The time between now and April 30th will be for task selection, book selection, meditation, arranging baby/pet/spouse sitters, etc. :P

Here's how it will work:
1) Each person will have a BINGO "board" consisting of 25 tasks to be completed.
- 5 of the tasks are standard on EVERYONE's board, in the same location. These are the first 5 tasks in the list below, marked with the location of the task for your board.
- The "center" board location is a free choice book, meaning you can choose and read any book you like for this spot.

2) Each participant will fill in the remaining 19 spots with the tasks of their choice. Once these are locked in, this is the board you will play for the remainder of the challenge.
- Free Swaps: Each person will get 3 free swaps (1 per month) to change out tasks during the challenge. Changes can only be made by "spending" one of your swaps. Swap credits can be used at any time, as long as you have one to spend.

3) Books can be any length.

4) There's no genre requirement, though the tasks have been guided a little toward applicability for the genres we read in the group. You can use any book for a task unless it's specific to a genre.

5) Books you're reading prior to May 1st are permissible as long as you're currently reading them when the challenge starts.

6) Create a thread in the Bingo Challenge folder to track your progress. :)

General Set-up:
The Boards are configured, B-I-N-G-O across, and 1-2-3-4-5 down, as in standard Bingo. When listing them in your thread post, a board would look like this example:

B1- Funny
B2- Adapted to Movie
B3- POC Author
B4- Over 500 pages
B5- Banned Book
I1- Dragon!
I2- Translated
I3-LGBTQ+ MC
I4- Mystery/Thriller/Suspense
I5- Aliens
...Etc with N3 being the free choice square. The bolded items are the Standard tasks that are the same on all boards.

Scoring Rules:
1) The number associated with the letter is the score for that book. So, if I read the book associated with B1, my score for that book would be 1 point. Reading the I3 task would be 3 points, and my total would be 4 points. Etc. Feel free to arrange your board so that you maximize points!

2) Bingo bonuses:
- Complete 5 tasks, in any order, and it's a 1 point bingo (Can claim up to 5 times).
- Complete the word Bingo (read one book for each letter) and it's a 2 point bingo.
Example: B1, I1, N3, G4, O2
- Complete all of one letter, it's a 3 point Bingo
Example: B1-5
- Complete all of one number, and it's a 4 point bingo
Example: B1, I1, N1, G1, O1
- Complete a "diagonal" bingo, and it's a 5 point Bingo
Example: B1, I2, N3, G4, O5
- Complete all of the Standard tasks, and that's a 10 point bingo. (B3, I4, N2, G5, O1)

3) Bingo bonus points would be added to the task scores as completed. There are no limits to the number of Bingo combinations you can get. For instance, if you finish all the B tasks, you would earn 1 bonus point for completing 5 tasks, AND you'd get a 3 point bonus for the letter bingo, plus all of the individual book scores. If you then read I1N1G1O1, you get another bingo, worth 4 points. One more book, would be another 1 point bingo.

This is a self-scoring challenge, so we will be available to answer questions, help with scoring (if needed), provide recommendations, should you want them, or help with tasks, but you will be scoring your own challenges. :) Questions should be asked in this thread, and points should be tracked in your own thread, though you're more than welcome to post updates here as well.

Step one is to decide the tasks you want to do, and we'll go from there. :D You can use mine as an example of what it should look like: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Or Chris's - which has a different way of tracking, as though on a real bingo board. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Jay (okay_jay) | 135 comments Can one book count for multiple squares,or is that player preference?

message 9: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) No, one book per square. Should be 25 books total.

Cool, thanks.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Can we use books that we've started before May 1? I've got 3 bogging me down and if any progress I do make on them doesn't count, I'll be more inclined to keep avoiding them.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm gonna say yes...

(Because I totally plan to)

message 13: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I wasn't going to for this challenge, but I have no objection to others using them. I'd limit to books read this year though. :P

message 14: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Or are we just talking currently reading?

message 15: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I *thought* they were talking currently reading - which I'm down with. I mean, if we start now but don't finish until after May 1st?

Cause in loading up for the challenge, I'm starting to create a book traffic jam. I'm just sitting on books waiting until the 1st to start them.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Got a question: What is the cut off for oldest book in the TBR? I have a LOT that I don't know how old they are. I found and read one that is 5 years old. How does that work?

message 23: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm sure you have ones that are older than 5 years old...

There's not one... It's just incentive to get you to read a book that you've had for a while. Go ahead and count it.

:-(

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Me too!

I think that might be one I switch out.

But I'm sure there are TONS of books that get adapted to movies... I'm just not sure there are any on my reading horizon currently.

Same here.

I haven;t read The Night Circus and have it slated for my "gift" item...but I heard it was in development for a movie.

message 28: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I switched out the one that I was planning to use for that, and now it's Thank You for Smoking, which I have in PB, but I was planning to use Hidden Figures: The Untold True Story of Four African-American Women Who Helped Launch Our Nation into Space, which I have on audio through Audible, and can share through their Send Book thing, if you're interested?

Other options:
The Talented Mr. Ripley
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
The Handmaid's Tale

If you're interested in any of those?

I think it's been "in development" since 2011, but I don't think it's actually going to happen.

Do you have all of those in audible? If yes, I'd love Lacks. If no, I'll take Hidden Figures.

I'll never.ever.never.ever read The Handmaids Tale willingly. My older sister is blind and she read it when I was in elementary. This was before things like earbuds and only big over the ear headphones. I was traumatized for life.

message 31: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) All in Audible, yes. I'll send the link to Lacks to your email. :)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I was at the theater and just saw a trailer for The Sisters Brothers, which I've had on my TBR list for ever, so I guess I'm gonna be bumping that up the list for Movie Adaptation!

Hey Nicki -

I got my copy of Sisters Brothers from the library.

I'm in the middle of something else, so it'll be a few days, but I'll be able to start it soon.
