I read this in the mid-to-late 90s. All I remember is the main character (a kid) wished for a pet (I'm nearly 100% sure it was a horse), and they have to keep it a secret. The wish is granted by a genie.

I also just remembered that she wished to have long nails, but they wouldn't stop growing. She gets to school and has to trim them with scissors inside of her desk. It was a weird book, that's for sure.
