I think I'm going to take a break from browsing these lists, let it seem as if I dislike too many of the selections. One of the problems I had with this was that the setting didn't feel like historical fiction (except for the lack of mobile phones), but the terminology and attitudes did. That's not the author's fault, but it made for uncomfortable reading nowadays, imo. I've elaborated in my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Thanks for leading me to Yoshimoto - even though this one didn't work for me I'm going to read more of her work.

"...The two stories collected here are about women grieving after the death of a loved one--certainly a depressing subject matter but also one that is handled gracefully by Yoshimoto, who effortlessly shifts the stories to a small place of hope before ending with such a sense of optimism that one has to marvel at the craft displayed here. I wondered at how strange this felt to me, that such a dark exploration of death could somehow bring me happiness...."
