Ryan R Monument 14, is a funny and action filled thriller where Emmy Laybourne helps you fantasize about the possibility of a really interesting global disaster. I find that this novel is an amazing read for any fellow highschooler at any literary level.
I really enjoyed reading every page of this book, from the beginning where I felt already connected to the main character to the very exciting end. Monument 14, follows Dean Grieber a high schooler 16 years of age living in the year 2024. It starts out with Dean nearly missing the bus, which happens all too often I'm sure to many high schoolers and heads to school just like any other day. It is all routine to him until the massive hailstorm disaster bombards his school bus and is forced to take refuge in the local superstore. The madness continues when they notice that the network that they rely on every day for a daily living is down and no technology is working. With each new day, they discover worse and worse situations even getting raided by outsiders who they don't know. Monument 14 is the first book in a trilogy, where the bad days keep on coming. I feel like I relate personally to this book, based on the fact that it follows a high school 16-year-old boy, just like me, and even though is in horrible situations has many of the problems I have. Such as fitting in with a social class, similar problems with girls, and taking responsibility when times get rough. I feel that the meaning of Monument 14 is to not rely on outside forces to take care of you. As soon as the book starts the kids on the bus get hurled around until crashing into the superstore and having to make decisions/ fend for themselves. The kids' parents, guardians, and caretakers all are useless to them now that they are secluded in the storm. Also, the network that the kids all rely on is taken from them the first day of being alone.
Monument 14 is an amazing story of how even though you may not have anybody you depend on, you can still achieve great feats and survive.
