David Was one of my best finds of the year! I love this book so much that I keep buying it again and again, just so I can send it to friends. Rachel Joyce is a great character writer, and she really knows drama; she can mix tragedy and comedy like a real master.

I reckon *everyone* should read this book.

David Spencer I’ve read a few contemporary pilgrimage books, e.g. Pilgrimage to Eternity (Egan) and A Time of Gifts (Patrick Leigh Fermor). As an English major, I’m familiar with classics like Piers Plowman and the Canterbury Tales. Joyce tells Harold’s story of connection and loss and ultimate redemption through remembrances and encounters as he walks the 600 miles from Devon to Berwick-upon-Tweed. It’s a touching and meaningful book.
