What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I read this in the 90's or early 2000's but I got it from the library so it could be older.
I remember it was kind of a fairytale, stand alone I think.
The main character might have been a princess? She goes on a quest in the forest with a talking deer who I think is under a spell or something?
There might be something about a sword?
Also, I think there was some sort of evil villain that they were both dealing with.

Is it Little Brother and Little Sister? It has an evil stepmother who puts a spell on the brother, while him and his sister are in the forest, so he is transformed into a deer.

Probably not the book, since there's no sword or quest, but in Gervase, published in 1970, a girl named Maeve befriends a male deer named Gervase, and they do talk to each other. She's not a princess though, and he's not a man under a spell, just a deer she can talk to.

Crazy coincidence. I just happened to check this discussion group again for the first time in years and saw someone had posted a very similar question 3 years ago or something and it was just answered 15 hours ago with a book called Gleaming Bright.
I think that is the book I was originally thinking of, although Soulstring is also a possibility. I’m going to get both of them and see.
