Of the television show Doctor Who, of course...

Here are mine:

10. The War Games
09. Vengeance on Varos
08. The Ark in Space
07. The Curse of Fenric
06. Tomb of the Cybermen
05. The Deadly Assassin
04. The Invasion
03. Inferno
02. The Caves of Androzani
01. City of Death

honourable mention to The Time Warrior

Jim | 16 comments So hard to narrow it down!

10. Terror of the Autons
9. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
8. Horror of Fang Rock
7. Genesis of the Daleks
6. Tomb of the Cybermen
5. The Ark in Space
4. Seeds of Doom
3. Inferno
2. Invasion of Time
1. City of Death

Honorable mentions go to The Talons of Weng Chiang and The Sontaran Experiment

I notice that I'm pretty heavy on the Tom Baker episodes. I'm surprised nothing with Colin Baker got on the list. There are no David Tennant episodes, because I've watched them only once. Everything on my list has had multiple viewings.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Damn, they need to hurry up and release Seeds of Doom on DVD, already!

At least we're in agreement that City of Death is pretty much the pinnacle of Doctor Who.

I really, really liked The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances two parter. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit stood out as the best part of the rather weak second series, and Human Nature/The Family of Blood was just an incredible adaption of the novel (maybe even a tad better, perhaps?) in series three. I seem to like a bunch of two-parters from the new series, hmm? Recently, I quite enjoyed The Fires of Pompeii.

It's possible some of the new series episodes could force their way into my personal top ten at some point, but I just haven't watched them as much as the episodes from the classic series.

message 4: by Jim (new)

Jim | 16 comments City of Death - the cameo by John Cleese was all gravy! I know that MY copy of the Mona Lisa is the original.

Impossible Planet/Satan Pit was pretty awesome. A lot of times Rose mildly annoyed me, but she was the quintessential tough chick at the end of Satan Pit.

Liked Father's Day, too.

Doctor Who included, it amazes me how many great old movies and TV series aren't available on a digital format.

message 5: by Jim (new)

Jim | 16 comments If I were to do my Top 10 episodes list, I'd have to add The Deadly Assassin, Stones of Blood, The Daemons, and Pyramids of Mars (especially the last one). I wouldn't want to drop any of the other entries, so I'd have to shoehorn them in extradimensionally.

Mary JL (maryjl) | 64 comments Glad to find this Doctor Who group! Hard to limit to tne only but here goes:

1)Ark In Space
2)Pyramids of Mars
3. Spearhead from Space
4. Terror of the Autons
5. Caves of Androzani
6. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
7. The Girl in the Fireplace
8. The Daemons
9. Father's Day
10.Frontier in Space

message 8: by Jim (new)

Jim | 16 comments Even though a lot of people slag off the new series and don't care so much for Ms. Piper, I thought "Father's Day" and "Girl in the Fireplace" were both pretty good.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I think most of the New Series slagging off comes from grouchy old-timers like you and me, pining for more Jon Pertwee/Roger Delgado chase scenes and Patrick Troughton battling tinfoil monsters.

I jest, but I think the long-time fans have found more to nitpick than the more recent fans.

message 10: by Mary JL (new)

Mary JL (maryjl) | 64 comments Matthew: Fortunately, I like both the old and new series. Imho, there are really no good or bad Doctors--just good and bad episodes for each. Admittedly, we all have our favorites.

Glad to see another Jon Pertwee fan--the episeds with Pertwee and Delgado are some of the very best!

message 11: by Jim (new)

Jim | 16 comments Truth be told, I have a soft spot for Messrs. Tennant and Eccleston. Not my favorites, but glad the series came back. I think they serve a purpose of being "entry" doctors for new fans. My daughter used to make fun of the old series, but then she had a crush on David Tennant; now I catch her watching my Tom Baker videos.

message 12: by Mary JL (new)

Mary JL (maryjl) | 64 comments I have a soft spot for Eccleston and Tennant also. In really, really wish though, that we had two season of Eccleston before he left! We have so very few stories with him and he was a great Doctor!

message 13: by Ian (new)

Ian Coomber | 7 comments I probably haven't seen enough classic Who to give a top 10 list, but 'Genesis Of The Daleks' is definately the best of those I have seen. Of the new series, 'Girl In The Fireplace' and 'Blink' are the two stories that stand out for me.

I also have to admit for having a soft spot for the 1996 movie. Yes, I'll admit that as a televistion story it is a big piece of American shambles, but having been born in 1985 it was my first proper experience of watching Doctor Who, and as such shall always be special to me.

message 14: by Christina Stind (last edited Aug 17, 2009 03:29AM) (new)

Christina Stind | 6 comments I haven't seen any of the classic Doctor Who - have just recently discovered the Doctor. Working my way through the new series at the moment and favourite episodes are Blink, Human Nature/The Family, The Unquited Dead (mostly because of the Dickens stuff), The Girl in the Fireplace and School Reunion (because of Anthony Steward Head).

message 19: by Deedee (last edited Apr 12, 2011 12:06PM) (new)

Deedee | 10 comments I've watched every single Doctor Who episode .... beginning with "Rose" with Christopher Eccleston as the doctor. Earlier episodes aren't readily available here in America, especially if one has a limited budget. (I do remember seeing a couple of episodes with the doctor with the long scarf -- internet tells me that was Tom Baker -- back in the 1970s, but after all this time, I couldn't tell you which ones they were.)

I'll answer the question posed as regards the seasons I have viewed.

Top doctors:
#1 David Tennant
#2 Matt Smith
#3 Christopher Eccleston

Top ten episodes:
1. Vincent and the Doctor
2. The Girl in the Fireplace
3. The Lodger
4. Blink
5. Father's Day
6. The Stolen Earth / Journey's End
7. Turn Left
8. Amy's Choice
9. The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang
10. Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead

and an honorable mention to:
Christmas Special: The Next Doctor

Looking forward to the American premier of the next season of Doctor Who, now just 4 days away! :0)

message 29: by Katie (new)

Katie (--katie--) | 13 comments As the majority of episodes that I've watched have been from 2005 onwards, my top ten are from these. And they're not in order of preference.

1. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances: The gas-mask people were the first 'monsters' to really scare me.
2. The Unquiet Dead:I like period dress, the blue ghosts were cool and the conversation between the Doctor and Charles Dickens was amusing.
3. School Reunion:A good introduction to Sarah-Jane and the interaction between her and Rose was well-played.
4. The Girl in the Fireplace: I love the idea of the revolving fireplace and the clockwork men were great, scary use of ticking plus the fact that they liked to carve people up was creepy.
5. Blink:I'm not the greatest fan of series 3 but these monsters were beyond scary. Plus Carey Mulligan was a great guest start.
6. Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead:Steven Moffat again. He has this knack for taking something you can easily find in the real world and making it extremely scary.
7.Turn Left:A well-done episode but also harrowing.
8.The Doctor's Wife:I love the conversation between the Doctor and his....
9.A Good Man Goes to War:Sad in places but River Song!
10. Tooth and claw:I happened to be visiting Scotland when this aired, and it added to the atmosphere. Plus it made me jump.

message 30: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk | 11 comments Matt wrote: Wow.. another Tom Baker diehard. I will never understand the Tom Baker lovers, haha."

I find that people tend to love The Doctor they saw first the most.

I don't know that I would have connected as well with the series had I seen Hartnell, first, for example. For me, Who is Tom Baker. Everybody else's Doctor gets compared to him, not necessarily favorably. Colin Baker, for instance. Never thought Sylvester McCoy really got it, either. And I never really got into Tennant, although I enjoyed Eccleston.

message 31: by michelle+8 (new)

michelle+8 (michelleplus8) Eeek, ten? Hard to whittle it down! These are in chronological order, because I can't decide which ones are better than which.

1. Rose -- very underestimated, IMHO! It was the perfect way to bring back the series! Plus it has one of my favorite lines ever, "Nice to meet you, Rose! Now run for your life!"
2. The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances -- for obvious reasons. And for the introduction of Captain Jack.
3. Tooth and Claw -- for David Tennant's Scottish accent. Sigh.
4. School Reunion -- because I <3 Sarah Jane.
5. Blink -- though it was Doctor-light, it was amazing!
6. Voyage of the Damned -- because Kylie Minogue. Enough said?
7. The Eleventh Hour -- amazing intro for a new doctor and new companion!
8. Vincent and the Doctor -- OK, my FAVORITE episode ever. I just loved Vincent, and I cried with Amy at the end!
9. The Lodger -- because the Doctor, trying to be a regular bloke? Fantastic!
10. The Doctor's Wife -- because how can you NOT love Sexy?

message 43: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2281 comments Hmmm, let’s see ... classic series:

An Unearthly Child (just the first episode, I actually count it separately from 100,000 BC, so it’s story 0 for me)
The Mind Robber
The Time Meddler
Enemy of the World
The Moonbase
The Faceless Ones
The Web of Fear
The Talons of Weng-Chiang
The Daleks’ Master Plan
The Aztecs

New series (this is tough), but if I’ve got to go with ten (Okay, I give up, my first version of this list basically had almost every episode of series 4 on it and there wasn’t room for anything else, which isn’t really fair - so I’m cheating):
Series 4 (Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead; Midnight; Partners in Crime; The Unicorn and the Wasp, The Fires of Pompeii; Turn Left; The Stolen Earth / Journey’s End)
Rosa
Vincent and the Doctor
The Demons of Punjab
The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit
Human Nature / The Family of Blood
Blink
The Day of the Doctor
Empty Child / The Doctor Dances
School Reunion

But I’ve also got to give a shout out to these:
The Magician’s Apprentice / The Witch’s Familiar
Dark Water / Death in Heaven
The Zygon Invasion / The Zygon Inversion
Time Heist
Twice Upon a Time
Spyfall Part 1 / Spyfall Part 2

And I’m also quite fond of these as they subvert some of the conventions of the series and audience expectations:
Last Christmas
The Idiot’s Lantern
The God Complex
Sleep No More
Hell Bent
Love & Monsters
Amy’s Choice
Fugitive of the Judoon
The Timeless Children

message 44: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 25 comments Christ what a cruel question. 10!? uh...here goes nothing...

1. Genesis of the Daleks
2. The Deadly Assasin
3. Talons of Weng Chiang
4. Earthshock
5. Caves of Androzani
6. Curse of Fenric
7. Inferno
8. The Invasion
9. Snakedance
10. City of Death.

One should point out, putting City of Death last shows the quality of the show if that's one I least favour from the list. I could have also just basically listed everything from Phillip Hinchcliffe and Robert Holme's tenure on the show, 74-77 being just an unprecedented period of brilliance. I could also do a list of ones most people think are shit/average but I think are great/brilliant.

The Time Monster
The Mutants (yes, really to both)
The Gunfighters
Thr Horns of Nimon
The Awakening
Paradise Towers
Dragonfire (I like Slyvester McCoy's 1st season, its good!)
The Happiness Patrol
Nightmare on Eden
Ambassadors of Death
Terminus

for new series (roughly)

1) Human Nature/Family of Blood (without hesitation the crowning piece of NewWho. Unsurpassed in my opinion.
2) Hell Bent (okay, perhaps this surpassed it).
3) Turn Left
4) Impossible Planet/Satan Pit
3) Midnight
4) Fires of Pompei (season 4 was fucking amazing!)
5) Utopia
6) Dalek
7) Unicorn and the Wasp
8) Love and Monsters
9) Shakespeare Code
10) Listen.

I think. I may of course completey change my mind. :S
