Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix was... disappointing, to say the least. The first book in Dao's duology was passionate and full of intrigue, combining East Asian mythology, fairy tales, and culture to create a unique retelling of Snow White from the perspective of the villain!

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns was a seemingly ordinary chocolate you bite into to discover that it's actually a truffle and is so much better than you would have from a plain outside (read:cover).

This second installment was, by comparison, a bunch of tales tossed into a food processor with "Hero's Journey" and "The Quest" tropes and given a quick mix before dumping it into a casserole dish.
