Having quite the obsession (probably unhealthily) with elves, I really love the foundations that this work lays for their culture, in particular regarding music. The cultural salience of music seems to be something that's utterly ubiquitous whether you're reading of elves in LOTR or some other fantasy series. Most commonly this element of their culture will be most obvious in their "melodious" or "sing-song" voices, which are inevitably by playing a harp or some-such string instrument at some point. Surprisingly though I don't so much mind the predictability of musical elements in their culture. Because of the time it takes to perfect music and the continual pleasure it can sustain, having it linked with a near-immortal race is quite a nice way of expressing one's own love of it. The Music of The Ainur is probably the glorious expression of this for me, as music is literally laid in the foundations of the elves and their world.
