What happened to earth?

So centuries after the kosmos left earth, what became of earth, did the people on earth know there was a new civilization being established on nova? It mentions that the earth was silent so did the new generations born on nova attempt to communicate with earth? Did planet earth eventually decline like the civilizations discovered on nova when the kosmos first arrived?

My take was that Earth had imploded on itself because of the one-child policies, just like the earlier society on Alpha Centauri had. I left the book with the idea that we are meant to think that Earth is also dead, killed by the same evil influences that hurt Nova most of the way through the book. I did find it unsatisfying that this was not really answered, and that was part of a variety of things that felt not-quite-fleshed-out at the very end. (trying to do this without too much in the way of spoilers)
