I read Mara a while back. The character features a very popular athlete in a scifi universe. There are a few scenes with her playing something similar to volleyball, the pastime that is broadcast worldwide. Too bad for the ending, but it's a quick read. (view spoiler)[The story goes a bit pear-shaped when she steadily gains more and more superpowers, loses her status and friends, then just up and leaves the planet behind. (hide spoiler)]

A better choice than Mara is Southern Bastards, Vol. 1: Here Was a Man. The small town featured in the story is passionate about football - the second volume for example has plenty of football jargon that went completely over my head. The sports element might not be pivotal, but it sure is prevalent.
