The book Days to the Gallows by Katherine Spada Basto is interesting because it's about the Hartford witch panic so it's close to home for us. Also I liked a Murder at Fenway Park by Troy Soos because it's a murder mystery but has a lot of baseball and just general history to it. I'm not sure what I'll read this time yet. I think a book set in the 80s could be historical if it was rooted enough in that time that you learned something about it or it was specific to it.
I LOVE historical fiction! Its my jam. The time period is just as important if not more important than the plot. 1980s totally counts. I tend to like things further back but as long as you are learning something about a time and place different than now, it counts.
I'm currently reading The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, YA historical fiction about a girl who wants to be a doctor. I also have The Library Book on my list which falls into that 1980s category!
I saw The Great Alone on the Historical Fiction table and I managed to get it from Overdrive. I think Danielle also recommended it. Then I found out that Amy Stewart's Kopp Sisters series is based on a real character and real events so I am adding Miss Kopp Just Won't Quit Great challenge categories this year!

I read some really great historical fiction this year and look forward to more in 2020! Such a great topic. If you are looking for something pretty cool - Lauren Willig, Karen White, and Beatriz William's have written two books together and their third comes out in January. Great tie in to the 2020 challenge.
