‘If you wanted so badly to be seen as rational, then how did that fella end up in my damn seat? You know, being that he was a stranger and all?’
Charlotte almost laughed. Like she hadn’t anticipated that line of questioning! ‘Easy,’ she said, swerving to avoid a shuffler crawling dis-jointedly across the road, one arm raised to shield its eyes from the headlights. As Charlotte passed it, she saw its old-lady-dress fly up and she averted her eyes out of polite respect for the elderly, rather than disgust, which was there too. ‘His friend had coffee. I wanted some. And you can’t get coffee through an open window and Sayid was kind of cute, so I rolled it down. While I was hitting on him, his friend crawled in beside me and asked if I’d take them both on and I said: ‘Oh sure, but can I have one of those smokes first? And then maybe one after?’ Charlotte sighed dramatically, swerving again only this time, around a joey. ‘But then I realised that I’m probably too small to take two dicks at once and when I tried to back out, they called me a tease, so I shot one and ran over the other.’
Absolute silence followed her explanation. Charlotte had to glance out the window, pretending to covet the Nikes of a dead woman she passed by, so she could smile privately.
‘I mean, well… that’s what you think happened, isn’t it?’ She waved her hand around the air. ‘What all men think? That women get flirted into danger like moths to flames? That we’re so fucking stupid that we just bumble blindly through life, arms outstretched until we latch on to the kind fella who will care for us in exchange for head?’
Will’s voice was acid. ‘What. Happened?’Palpitations
