We begin in Old Town Albuquerque, the historic district that dates back to 1706. The old adobe buildings house museums, shops selling Native American handicrafts and the beautiful San Felipe de Neri Church. For a great introduction to our trip, visit the Turquoise Museum to learn the history of the mining of this beautiful stone.

On this 1,300 feet portion of Route 66, the rumble strip groves in the highway clearly play America the Beautiful into your car. But ONLY IF you observe the 45 mph speed limit. The road was modified in 2014 by National Geographic as an experiment to see what would entice drivers to slow down.

With rambling walls made out of 50,000 glass bottles and an exterior filled with old western memorabilia, the outside is as much a museum as the wonders found within.

Our next stop is listed as one of the top 10 small museums in the US and houses the hand-carved miniature collection of the late Ross Ward. Originally created as a traveling exhibit for carnivals, the amazing miniatures are now displayed in this 22 room museum. With rambling walls made out of 50,000 glass bottles and an exterior filled with old western memorabilia, the outside is as much a museum as the wonders found within.

7. Drive 12 Miles from Tinkertown Museum to Golden
Blink twice and you might miss the ghost town of Golden, site of the first gold rush west of the Mississippi. Once a booming town with prospectors and saloons, it slowly diminished once the gold disappeared. Today it has a population of 50 and is home to one of the most photographed buildings along the Trail. The San Francisco Catholic Church was built in 1830 and restored by historian Fray Angelico Chavez in the 1960’s.

8. Drive 11 Miles from Golden to Madrid
Madrid’s rich history has taken it from a coal mining town in the 1800’s to today’s distinctive artist community. Take a leisurely stroll down main street enjoying the shops and galleries filled with treasures and funky art. Have lunch at the historical Mine Shaft Tavern and visit the Old Coal Town Museum where you can step into Engine 769 and ring its bell.

Our next road trip is the famous Turquoise Trail in New Mexico.
Designated a National Scenic Byway in 2000, Highway 14 is named for the precious stone first mined there centuries ago. This 50 mile historic byway is filled with stunning blue skies, hundred-mile views, and high desert hills. It’s easy to see why the landscape inspires both artists and mystics today.
Here's how it work:
The number of miles traveled from place to place will be the numbers you use to choose your books. You can mix and match one of the below ways to complete the task but please indicate in each post which option you are using.

its mountain communities. The highlight here is the Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site. The Pueblo was built in 1313 AD and soon became a thriving community until drought caused it to be completely abandoned by the early 1400s. The museum's self-guided interpretive trail helps you envision the 200 room pueblo with its native gardens.

10 small museums in the US and houses the hand-carved miniature collection of the
late Ross Ward. Originally created as a traveling exhibit for carnivals, the amazing miniatures are now displayed in this 22 room museum. With rambling walls made
out of 50,000 glass bottles and an exterior filled with old western memorabilia, the outside is as much a museum as the wonders found within.

7. Drive 12 Miles from Tinkertown Museum to Golden
of Golden, site of the first gold rush west of the Mississippi. Once a booming town with prospectors and saloons, it slowly diminished once the gold disappeared. Today it has a population of 50 and is home to one of the most photographed buildings along the Trail. The San Francisco Catholic Church was built in 1830 and restored by historian Fray Angelico Chavez in the 1960’s.
