I’m still on the first one. Initially I liked the beginning. But I seem to lose interest when she goes back and describes what happened to her husband, not enough action. I’m going to try to finish, but I keep staring new books and putting it on the back burner.
SPOILERS (Yes, I know it’s the Spoiler thread, but Rina above indicated she had not read this far yet, thus the additional warning.)
OK, I suspected that Gerick was not the duchess’s son (but maybe the Duke’s), but didn’t put together whose son he was until the toy soldiers were melted and Lucy/Maddy was found dead.
And I also had suspected that Darzid was more than he seemed, but again, didn’t put it all together until just before his real identity was revealed in the book.
So, the Lords of Zhev’Na get their power by “drinking” the “dark” emotions of others—anger, fear, hatred—and by sucking the life essence out of things? Well, not things, but living things, although even rocks appear to have a spark of “essence” in them since that is where Gerick started learning the process. And that is what the Heir of D’Arnath and the followers of the Way forbid?
I did not think the loyalties in the Protectorate would play out as they did. Or that Dassine would be killed.
Paolo is a wonderful, wonderful character! And Gerick has a long, treacherous road ahead of him, I think.

I was thinking I wasn't going to like this as much a s the first book, but it really kept me interested throughout the entire book!
