For my graphic novel I chose to read "Smile" by Raina Telgemeier. I chose this book because I remember peers in my classes reading it in middle school and they liked it. I really enjoyed reading this book, or genre, because it was really fun reading more of a comic book than a novel. I don't think I have ever read another novel like this one, and I really enjoyed it. In "Smile", Raina is the main character who just started sixth grade. One night after her Girl Scout meeting her and her friends were racing to the door when Raina fell and knocked out her front teeth. She was already getting braces for her overbite, but now she's missing her two front teeth as well. I really felt like I could connect with this because in sixth grade I also got braces. I didn't knock out my front teeth, but I had an expander which made my two front teeth have a huge gap between them. I started sixth grade with a huge gap between my teeth, and Raina started her sixth grade year with no teeth. I felt that I could really connect with her because it was hard to start at a new school looking and feeling weird. I really enjoyed the story and all the fun pictures that went along. I think anyone would love this book because it is funny and is a quick read. I definitely will be reading more graphic novels in the future!
