I did not catch the bogan reference the first time through, but as I looked back over these chapters for this discussion I made a note of it. You beat me to it! More thoughts later
Female Stormtroopers? I am on board with that. Zaluna is an interesting character as she has real conflict with her job and what it has become. The scene where Kanan and Hera finally meet was full of action as well as being quite amusing. Poor Skelly, he is trying so hard to do what he feels is right but he is so frustrating sometimes. All he wants to do is explain to Vidian, lol. The meeting with Kanan, Hera and Zaluna was interesting even if Kanans attempts at flirting felt forced. He just does not seem like that type of character I guess. Phase one complete.
Female troopers? Is the GFFA veering into anatomically correct armor now? I sure hope it is done tastefully if this shows up in the TV show. Lucasfilm runs the risk of being accused of sexism if they aren't careful.
They're nothing new -- they were in the comics long ago -- but regardless, it fit with a universe where the only societal fractures shown in the films are between species, between social classes, and between organics and droids. I spoke a bit more about the topic here: http://bit.ly/JJMon1138
Thanks JJM. I just started chapter 22 and I see that the trooper voice was feminine. That makes more sense. I am no EU expert, though I was familiar with women as captains and admirals. This was the first time I knew of a female stormtrooper. Can troopers be promoted to the officer class? I always imagined them as being grunts and nothing but grunts. Hmm.
I don't know about that -- it would be worth checking out the new Star Wars: Imperial Handbook Deluxe Edition book that Dan Wallace has coming out.My presumption is that the stormtroopers and naval officers are in different branches -- the TIE pilots are the ones in the Imperial Navy. Sloane would have come through the Imperial Academy, which is the same institution as the Republic's naval academy.
I was surprised to see more than one female character as the Empire is not only known for anti-alien sentiments but also chauvinistic tendencies. The Empire does not discriminate in its discrimination. But as I'm typing this I realize that this premise probably stems from the EU itself, so I guess I have no case
