Another month, another read, another discussion topic! This time around we're reading The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell -- an interesting fusion of contemporary urban fantasy and historical fiction heist! What are we thinking so far? I'm about 100 pages in and I'm intrigued....

Please be sure to follow our group rules and ALWAYS mark your spoilers with the official spoiler tag like this:

Tib (tibcanread) | 38 comments It took me a hot minute to get used to the initial time travel stuff, mostly because I'm listening to it and I get confused a little easier with how I only listen to my audiobooks on my way to and from work, but now I'm really invested and I totally get why people love this book. I don't know what had me sleeping on this book this whole time!

Yeah I was so confused when we were jumping from the past to the literal present I was like "is this historical fiction or contemporary what is HAPPENING" but now that I feel like I understand the jumping around I feel a lot more engaged!

Tib (tibcanread) | 38 comments This book is a r i d e. The twists my dudes. I now understand why Hannah has been bugging the rest of the Bookmarked ladies to read this book. I need to stop and get the sequel immediately and I'm not even done with it. So close though!

Katie Faughnan | 11 comments I absolutely loved this book I just finished it last night and I can’t wait to read the sequel. It was hard at times because of the time travel but I enjoyed it.

Paulina Rupinska (paulinkar155) | 11 comments I'm half way through and I am enjoying this book so far I love Esta. I was nervous about starting this because I don't usually do well with time travel books but this one is so good.

Mandy (mandamahoney) | 6 comments I am almost 100 pages in and I’m not fully loving it yet. I want to love it so bad! Please tell me it gets better and better..?

it does get better and better!

Mandy (mandamahoney) | 6 comments Okay I’m 230 pages in and I’m fully INVESTED NOW 🎉 why does Dolph remind me so much of Kaz from SoC?! Anyone else think that?

Ashley Moore (amreads_) | 6 comments I’m on pg. 75 and I’m very interested to find out more. But does very chapter start with background of the time period or does it stop?

Elizabeth Raines | 2 comments Just finished! I love the characters, Harte was my favorite. The setting and use of magic was great! I predicted one of the plot points but I am really excited that I did! Can’t wait to read the sequel!

Is it because he has a bum leg and walks around with a cane, is ruthless when he needs to be, wants to destroy something brick by brick, and built his legacy from nothing?

FINALLY getting back into this one as a part of The Reading Rush and I'm feeling sorta mixed?! I'm about halfway through...

Does anyone else feel like this is an interesting mix of Outlander, The Gilded Wolves, and The Diviners?? How would you pitch this to a friend??

Live show is this weekend, can't wait to discuss with you all!

Lisa Naylor (wandering_faery) | 2 comments It took me ages to fully get into this. I'm listening to the audio book and I think if I'd have been reading it I would have put it down... It reminds me a bit of the Diviners (without the spooky bits!) but the twists and the dynamics of some characters remind me of Six of Crows...

Lisa Naylor (wandering_faery) | 2 comments I've not read Outlander and dnf'd the Guilded Wolves but I can understand the comparison with the latter, although this is much better I think!

I haven't read any of those, but I will take your word for it! I'm getting some Six of Crows vibes with the heist and interactions with some of the characters and like Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, I think all the best parts are in the second half of the book once the poop hits the fan. Can't wait for the live show!

Jess | 3 comments Nearly finished and I love it!! Way more than what I had anticipated. Definitely agree with the Outlander/SOC vibes. The characters are making me committed to them just the same. So far, Harte is my favorite character but man I want to shake him sometimes!

Jenna ౨ৎ (jennadelagarza) | 1 comments I just finished this book and omg!! I LOVE it! The plot twist at the end had me SHOOK!! I can’t wait for the sequel! 🤭😁

Ashley Moore (amreads_) | 6 comments I just got to Part 3 of the book and I’m loving it so far, but I have honestly just wanted to skip to the last chapter and read it just to see what happens (which i haven’t done) cause it seems slow paced at times. Has anyone else felt like doing that?

Jeanette (Latte and a Book) (jeanettethomsen) Oh my, I feel so bad right now cause I listen to the audiobook and I'm half way through and I'm still not really in to it. I'm going to try finish it and see if I can sort it out, but maybe it wasn't the right thing to choose the audiobook?!

Katie (katiesbooknook426) | 1 comments Spencer the fact that you said it’s reminding you of the Gilded Wolves has me SCARED

Honestly same! I finished the book maybe 15 minutes ago and all I can think is I NEED the sequel so I can continue in the world
