• ‘You might be safer here. I think you can guess my meaning’ (p.109). Widow Hesketh’s warning is the first independent acknowledgment of Mary as a witch. She explains that the New World is an even more dan- gerous place for her than England and makes Mary aware of the risk she causes to Martha. Why, then, does Mary decline the widow’s offer of work as her servant?
